As AI makes it increasingly easier to recreate existing software, one developer is taking the idea to an extreme. Brandon Thomas, a software engineer with 15 years of experience, has used Anthropic’s Claude to build ArtCraft, a collection of free, open-source alternatives to Adobe’s Creative Cloud apps, including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Lightroom, Acrobat, and After Effects. Built from scratch using the Rust programming language, the applications aim to replicate familiar editing tools without expensive subscriptions, with support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Thomas has already expanded the project to include alternatives to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Although the software remains in early development and lacks many features of its commercial counterparts, the project has gone viral as an example of a growing trend: AI dramatically reducing the time and resources needed to recreate software that once required large engineering teams and years of development.

Tesla just unveiled what Elon Musk is calling the future of flying cars, and the demonstration looked straight out of science fiction. At a SpaceX testing facility in Texas on October 15, Tesla revealed its long-awaited next-generation Roadster, equipped with powerful thrusters developed alongside SpaceX engineers. During the live demonstration, the electric supercar drove upside down along a curved ramp, launched into the air, performed a midair flip, and landed safely on its wheels. It even propelled itself over a lineup of five Tesla vehicles. Unlike traditional rockets, the Roadster uses bursts of highly compressed gas to generate thrust, allowing it to briefly lift off the ground and maneuver through the air.

The technology goes far beyond flight. Tesla demonstrated the Roadster accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 0.81 seconds, potentially making it one of the fastest-accelerating production cars ever if that performance reaches customers. Its experimental design also incorporates a powerful fan-based suction system that allows it to grip surfaces while upside down. Originally announced in 2017, the Roadster has faced nearly a decade of delays, with production now targeted for 2028. While the vehicle cannot sustain conventional flight like an airplane and its airborne capabilities are not approved for public roads, the demonstration offered a remarkable glimpse of what could happen when automotive engineering meets aerospace technology.

The subscription economy has turned everyday technology into a recurring expense. Cloud storage, home security, ad-free browsing, and even basic communication increasingly come with monthly fees. But there’s an alternative: devices that let you store terabytes of data at home, back up photos without cloud subscriptions, block ads across your entire network, and send messages miles away without cellular service. Many of these technologies have existed for years, yet most people have never heard of them. They’re a reminder that owning your technology can be more powerful than renting access to it.

During an open-day event at China’s Zhejiang University in November 2025, flight-test engineer Jiao Bojing demonstrated a jet-powered backpack developed by the university’s JetRob research team. Equipped with five miniature jet engines, the device allowed him to lift roughly two meters off the ground, hover, maneuver and land in front of spectators.

Developed over approximately four years, the experimental jetpack weighs 31 kilograms without fuel and can sustain flight for three to five minutes. Its developers report a theoretical top speed of 100 km/h and envision future applications in emergency rescue, specialized operations and autonomous robotics.

In 2006, Suzuki unveiled the SXBox, an Xbox 360-themed concept car based on the Suzuki SX4, designed to turn a vehicle into a mobile gaming station. Built by California-based American Sunroof Corporation, the car featured two Xbox 360 consoles, a controller integrated directly into the steering wheel, force-feedback seats, and a surround-sound system. A projector could display games on the underside of the raised hood, while rear passengers had dedicated screens and a 30-inch display extended from the trunk for outdoor gaming. Unveiled at the 2006 San Diego International Auto Show, the SXBox was never intended for mass production, but remains a memorable example of the mid-2000s fascination with combining gaming technology and automotive design.

Vitalik Buterin is a Russian-Canadian programmer who co-founded Ethereum, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency networks. Fascinated by Bitcoin as a teenager, he proposed Ethereum in 2013 at just 19 years old, envisioning a blockchain capable of running decentralized applications and smart contracts. He dropped out of university to pursue the project, which officially launched in 2015.

Ethereum eventually grew into a network worth hundreds of billions of dollars, transforming industries ranging from finance to digital ownership. Despite his success, Buterin is known for his modest lifestyle, unconventional personality, and interest in philanthropy. His journey from teenage programmer to influential technology pioneer remains one of cryptocurrency’s most remarkable success stories. by @esc8pe.reality

Before the PlayStation 3 launched in 2006, Sony unveiled a radically different controller prototype at E3 2005 that quickly earned the nickname “Boomerang” because of its unusual curved, futuristic design. Unlike the familiar DualShock controllers that had defined PlayStation gaming for years, the prototype featured elongated handles and a sleek, almost sci-fi appearance that divided fans and sparked widespread criticism online. Sony ultimately abandoned the design before the console’s release, opting instead for the more traditional Sixaxis controller, which introduced motion sensing but initially lacked vibration feedback. The Boomerang never reached consumers, yet it remains one of PlayStation’s most memorable unreleased accessories, offering a fascinating glimpse into an alternate future where one of gaming’s most recognizable controllers could have looked completely different.

Released in 2009, Fireboy and Watergirl became one of the most iconic browser games of the late 2000s and early 2010s. Popularized through websites like Coolmath Games, the cooperative puzzle series became a staple of school computer labs and childhood afternoons. Players controlled two elemental characters using the same keyboard, working together to navigate obstacles, activate switches, and complete increasingly challenging levels. Its simple mechanics made it accessible to nearly anyone, while its cooperative gameplay encouraged teamwork, communication, and plenty of friendly arguments.

For Gen Z, Fireboy and Watergirl represents a nostalgic era of gaming before expensive hardware, online subscriptions, and competitive matchmaking became so prominent. Alongside classics like Run and Papa’s Pizzeria, it helped define the golden age of Flash games, when all you needed was a computer, an internet connection, and a friend sitting beside you. Its lasting legacy lies less in groundbreaking technology and more in the shared childhood memories it created for an entire generation.

A new wave of browser-based gaming projects is bringing beloved childhood titles back to life, allowing players to experience classic games without downloading software or owning the original consoles. Games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies, Halo: Combat Evolved, Modern Warfare 2, and Skate 3 are appearing in playable browser versions, sparking excitement across gaming communities. Many of these projects are being developed by independent programmers who use reverse engineering, emulation, and modern web technologies to recreate experiences once limited to dedicated gaming hardware.

Advancements in AI-assisted coding, WebAssembly, and browser graphics are helping make these projects increasingly feasible. However, not every browser version is a complete port of the original game, and some require existing game files or feature only limited functionality. Copyright concerns have also emerged, with major publishers pursuing takedowns of unauthorized versions. Despite these challenges, the movement highlights an exciting possibility for gaming preservation: a future where revisiting childhood favorites could be as simple as opening a link and playing with friends.
