ft. PlayStation retail stores
In the late 1990s, you could walk into a store built only for PlayStation. Sony opened a handful of flagship locations to show off the original console. They worked more like showrooms than game shops.
You could play the latest titles, browse walls of games and try upcoming releases before buying.
Then online retailers grew, downloads became normal, and the PlayStation Store let you buy games from your sofa. The stores were short lived, and the need for them disappeared. Now these photos feel like a reminder of when finding a new game meant trying a demo on a CRT television and leaving with a disc in your hand. What was the last game you bought on a disc? During the 2000s and early 2010s, gaming setups were often far less standardized than they are today. Purpose-built gaming desks, monitor arms, RGB lighting, and ergonomic chairs were not yet common, so players improvised with whatever space and furniture they had available-bedroom desks, old CRT monitors, oversized televisions, folding chairs, and sometimes completely makeshift constructions. LAN culture, bulky hardware, wired peripherals, and the rapid transition from CRTs to flat screens gave the era a distinctly chaotic look. In hindsight, these unusual setups capture a period when gaming was becoming a major part of everyday life, but the polished “gaming setup” aesthetic had not yet fully formed. follow me (@unembed) for more internet culture! 📎

Stuart Duncan quit his job as a web developer to run Autcraft, a private Minecraft server he created after seeing his autistic son and other children face bullying on public servers. Wanting to give them a place where they could simply be themselves, he launched the community in 2013. Autcraft is more than just a Minecraft server. Every player is carefully screened, the community is heavily moderated, and kindness is at the heart of everything. It has become a safe place where autistic children and their families can make friends, build confidence, and connect without fear of harassment. As the community grew, Duncan found himself spending hours each week supporting children who were struggling with bullying, isolation, and even suicidal thoughts. He ultimately left his career to dedicate himself to Autcraft full-time, accepting a lower income so he could continue protecting and supporting thousands of families around the world. ❤️ His account: @autismfather This post is brought to you by @esc8pe.reality, our brand new account for all the best stories in gaming.
