Never thought I’d be posting a first day of class picture (or FDOC as the kids say 😂), but here we are.

Today is my first day of grad school! 🎓 I’m officially starting my Master of Science in Organization Development at Pepperdine University.

This journey started last fall when I finally met Mary Messer in person after two years of partnering with her remotely. Over coffee in Portland, I asked her:

“How do I think the way you think?”

I’ve always admired the way Mary approaches problems. She stays curious, sees the bigger picture, holds multiple possibilities, and somehow makes you better without making you dependent on her expertise.

I assumed she’d recommend a book.

Instead, she recommended grad school. 😂

What followed was months of curiosity, skepticism, conversations with friends and family, Pepperdine alumni, my incredible boss, and a lot of talking myself into (and out of) this decision.

Then I met my cohort.

And I knew.

These were my people.

So here I am, ready to spend the next two years learning more about people, systems, organizations, change, and, most importantly, how to think, not just what to think.

I’m excited to bring it all back to Thorn, challenge my assumptions, ask better questions, and hopefully help the people and systems around me do their best work.

And don’t let this picture fool you. 😂

I am VERY excited.

And also very terrified.

when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, I had so many questions about what my life was going to look like now.

would I still be able to exercise the way I wanted to? would I have to change the things I loved? would my body still feel like my own?

3 years later, I’m still learning. but I’m also stronger, more confident, and more in tune with my body than I ever expected to be.

sure, my diagnosis changed the way I do some things. but it didn’t get to decide what I do with my life.

and honestly, a huge part of that confidence has come from learning how to manage this disease for myself.

I couldn’t have done that without @riselyhealth they’ve helped me better understand my body, my blood sugars, and how movement fits into all of it.

and, maybe most importantly, they’ve given me the confidence and independence to navigate this new reality on my own.

I’m still learning, but I’m no longer afraid of figuring it out 💙 by @escapewithkate

this body has carried me through grief, change, uncertainty, and a type 1 diabetes diagnosis I never saw coming.

it’s frustrated me.
humbled me.
taught me patience.

but it’s also shown me to be far more resilient than I ever gave it credit for.

so here’s to trusting it a little more. listening to it a little better. working with it instead of against it. and never underestimating what it’s capable of.
