How do we survive a time like this?

Not through isolation. Not through more screen time.

We survive a time like this through gathering, ritual, and being in a creative practice - collectively!

Join me as I co host We Make The World workshops - all the practices are coming from my new book ( you can pre order now ) I’ll guide you through them, but you don’t need me to practice with your family and community. Excited to share this offering. And thank you to my co hosts! #WeMakeTheWorld

We are beyond honored to reveal our new mural titled “The Gathering Tree of Life” located at the Rainier Valley Food Bank in South Seattle. After a long month of creating this during Seattle’s rainiest season, we finally completed it. This has been an amazing, challenging, and very rewarding project.

A little bit about this mural: it is an artist collaboration between myself @nataliasoteloart and @escot_mexcal . To create it, we gathered input directly from the food bank community so we could portray images and create a piece they would truly want to see. It is also inspired by the Tree of Life, more specifically the Mexican version, el “Árbol de la Vida.” With its bright colors, it is meant to be a beacon of hope in the community. This mural gives the South Seattle community a place that reflects their history and hopes, and helps them feel more at home, more connected, and represented through hope and abundance. More than just a food bank, it is a place of gathering, of meeting others, of making connections, of understanding one another, and of supporting each other. This is what this mural represents. The elements hanging from its branches portray an array of situations, such as local fruits from Washington, hummingbirds that represent our ancestors and a life guide, music and community, and more. Stay tuned for more pictures.

As a part of wrapping up the mural, we will have an artist talk and reception on Saturday December 6th to celebrate!

La Llorona of the Duwamish River depicts the original meandering path of the Duwamish River before it was straightened in the early 20th century. Drawn from the folk mythology of La Llorona (The Crying Woman), popular throughout Mexico and the American Southwest, La Llorona of the Duwamish River is seen weeping for the river which was lost from this place, known to its native inhabitants as too-KWHEHL-teed (“a large, open space”).

Still buzzing from todays mural unveiling as I bask in these gorgeous flowers from my students. They are such a wonderfully thoughtful gift. I feel seen and appreciated. Humbled. What an incredible collective effort to be a part of. The photos of the mural and todays unveiling party do no justice to the scale, and presence of this work, or to the web of connections, efforts, and happenings that created this project but I still want to share a little something out to mark what we created. taken in South Seattle College by @escot_mexcal

I soft launched this project a little while back, but never circled back to an official post. Partly its because there were some fabrication issues and a couple hard lessons learned. I had thought this site would be backlit at night and glow, but the area behind it stays dark and thus the effects of the lantern never really worked how I imagined. Well today the stars, nay star, aligned and I happened upon this while getting noodles at my favorite spot @szechuannoodlebowl. I couldn’t be happier with how it looks even if only for certain times of the year when things line up just right. taken in Uncle Bob’s Place by @escot_mexcal

Just got back from a week in west Texas where my family gathered to spread the ashes of my Uncle Pee Wee whose last wishes were to be laid to rest amongst our ancestors in the Garcia family cemetery, which lies on the banks of the Rio Grande/Río Bravo adjacent to the town of Boquillas Mexico.
.
While I was there I had the opportunity to meet with Annie Rosenthal from Marfa Public Radio who interviewed me for an upcoming story on my family’s history in the area, and our efforts to restore and preserve our cemetery. I was also able to go through the Big Bend National Park Archives and found photos of my ancestors adobe home, and photos of the cemetery when it was lovingly cared for, before our family was displaced by the creation of the park. by @escot_mexcal

New collaboration with Erin Shigaki @purplegat3. This mural depicts the solidarity of Chicano and Japanese American communities going back over 100 years and thriving today. The image tells the story of our shared histories and of our unity in the fight for liberation against white supremacy.
.
Thanks to @kc4culture and @seamarchc for making this work possible. Special thanks also to Dr. Jerry Garcia, and Erasmo Gamboa, and @denshoproject for their support, archives and historical consultation.
