“The Giving Tree of Life” 2025. As we wrap up this mural, I am still in awe and honestly do not know where to begin explaining the process. For now, I’ll leave you with some beautiful photos that @michaeltmontoya captured while we were in the middle of painting.

This mural depicts a Tree of Life, specifically the Mexican version (un árbol de la vida), to honor belonging, abundance, growth, connection, and everything this food bank represents for the community. This project is a collaboration between me and wonderful artist @escot_mexcal for the Rainier Valley Food Bank in Seattle, WA.

Now that we are done, I finally have time to sort through all the photos and videos I captured throughout the process, and there are many. Stay tuned for more in depth explanations and behind the scenes moments. Im so excited to share these videos and get to show our process, challenges, and joyful moments. Stay tuned!

I want to thank the @rainiervalleyfb for partnering with us on the final step in the creation of your space. Looking back at old photos when the wall was completely white, it is clear how far it has come and how much the space has transformed. Thank you to everyone who supported us in any way, whether through insights, encouraging words, bringing coffee or snacks, or helping with the work itself. And thank you to our team who assisted with this creation (@logofagem @good.juju.art @mars @carlosmartinezart @katybasnaw @doveyswork ).

This really feels like a dream come true to get to create this! I couldn’t have done it alone, so thank you for your support ❣️🙏🏽

Con cariño,

A love letter to the Jackson Building

Well, I finally did it. After nearly 25 years of moving around @japantownseattle ‘s Jackson Building, I’m officially gone. I sure am gonna miss it — I didn’t even live in my parent’s home this long!

Back in the early 2000s, as Copy Queen freelance fashion writer, I occupied #102 (which strangely enough is on the second floor), then became Momo Mama at the corner of Jackson and Sixth, and then person-in-flux, back upstairs. And now, I’ve quietly slipped out the back door.

I’ll miss my secret studio, with its polished wood floor and mahogany moulding; the mini sink in the corner, the “Private” entrance to nowhere, and original obscuring glass door. The view of the trafficked street below, framed by green leaves in the spring, and bare branches in the winter. And in the hallway, the long leather walkway salvaged from a battleship, leading the way to the window overlooking the alley, where the mural of @purplegat3 reminds us that Never Again is Now.

And I’ll miss my interesting neighbors: the artists, writers and music makers sharing walls with professionals from differing realms, all so vital to creating community.

And mostly, I’ll miss the possibilities the Jackson Building presented to me. It’s is where I found myself, a self that I didn’t know existed. Where I became part of something greater than I could’ve ever imagine. And even though I no longer hold the keys to the corridors, you know I just can’t stay away. Stay tuned for more adventures to come. xo Lei Ann
