An other “In between space” where I created the set design for the short film “An Ending (except) @an_ending.shortfilm Rituals I never understood why people created rituals around saying goodbye. In fact I was scared of this universal reality, death and rituals. Yet I realized it is uniquely human how we deal with it. Maybe it is to grasp the incomprehensible, I still don’t know. But what I do know, it is not a fixed sequence of actions. I think it’s much more, much deeper. Maybe it is a bridge between the physical and the intangible. Maybe it is a way to do something tangible when words fall short. Creating these sets for this film was about discovering a few quiet truths about life along the way. by @esculpturalda

So grateful to have been a part of “An Ending (except)” short film as Set Designer & Art Director for the “in between spaces.“ For this set, we wanted to build an atmosphere that felt like an intimate and dreamlike memory. By layering soft draped fabrics such as cheesecloth, warm golden hues with light and vintage wooden elements, we created a safe, cocoon-like space for this emotional scene. ‘Terceiro filho’ (zijn derde kroost) : Schilderij 100x120cm | 2019 | textuur medium, acryl en olieverf 𝗭𝗶𝗷𝗻 derde 𝗞𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 Zij was zeventien en hij een aantal jaar ouder Meteen werden zij verliefd toen ze elkaar hadden gezien Als kind kwam zij alleen van Angola naar NL met een aantal graden kouder En samen gingen ze verder en werden ze ook samen ouder Met 21 had zij haar eerste kind Voor hem was het zijn 3e kroost Toen hij t nieuws hoorde dat er een meisje kwam heeft hij haar vanaf t begin zo enorm bemind Een nieuw leven en een meisje was mijn vaders troost Toen ze op aarde kwam was hun eerste discussie over de naam Je gaat echt niet geloven wat mn pa toen had gedaan Mijn moeder wilde haar Esméralda noemen Hij zei daarop: Wat? Nee Esmeé zal je bedoelen! Met die andere naam komt ze later vast nooit aan een baan! Dus was mijn pa uiteindelijk naar de gemeente gegaan En ja raad eens wat hij heeft gedaan.. Esmee werd toen mijn officiële naam. Maar nu ga ik als roepnaam door als Esméralda zoals het hoorde te zijn Dus noem me Es Essie of Esméralda Want de naam Esmeé vind ik niet zo fijn. ——————————————————————- 3 jaar lang heb ik over dit schilderij gedaan, het heeft nooit het licht gezien van social media of uit mijn space, zoals meer van mijn werk wat uit mijn hart komt. T gaat om persoonlijke verhalen die soms te persoonlijk voelen. Maar ook vaak hoe langer ik twijfel en wacht, hoe hoger de drempel ook steeds weer wordt om het wel out there te brengen. Ik ben tot de realisatie gekomen dat als kunstenaar is het juist wel nodig om je hart op tafel te leggen, om je verhalen te delen. T is kwetsbaar ja, maar het gaat om een groter doel. Om mensen te inspireren, te bereiken en tot iets aan te kunnen zetten. It’s quite a journey. by @esculpturalda

For the theater performance: OMWEG NAAR HUIS. Together with @stef.krull we made the costume designs. It functions here as a second skin that embodies the duality between the Arab source and the western context. That emphasises the story of the search to longing for a place to belong. I'm so grateful that I have been part of this process last year. Special thanks to @dimo_zi for making this happen. 🟣Esmeralda🟣 @esculpturalda (zij/haar) is multidisciplinair kunstenaar en founder van Studio Sculpturalda. Met een achtergrond in mode en ruimtelijke vormgeving beweegt haar werk zich tussen mode, kunst en installatie design. Textiel staat daarbij centraal en is voor haar een drager van verhalen, herinneringen en emoties. In haar werk komen licht, textiel en beweging samen tot poëtische ervaringen die uitnodigen tot vertraging en ontmoeting. Suburbian Summer For Suburbia, I created and directed not one, but three campaign images. This was definitely one of the most challenging shoots I’ve done so far. This year’s Suburbian Summers poses the question: What is home? When do we feel at home? Is it a place, a scent, or a feeling? A home can be created anywhere — and that’s exactly what we tried to capture with the object on the beach. It was an amazing experience to create this together with one of my best friends, @esmeeraldcf, who designed the art object and supported me throughout the entire process. Right now, one of her works is also on display at Suburbian Summer. Esmeralda created the object, and together we hang it five meters above the ground on the beach in Almere. So much effort, all for that one golden hour — with around two hours of actual shooting time. It was incredibly exciting, but also nerve-wracking. We were worried about the wind, if it would fit in the bus, like was is it even possible. But in the end, we had the best team that made it such a great day, and it even felt like we just had a fun beach day. Thank you so much for giving me the freedom to do something like this and believing in me and my work @evalinedeboer @nanajongerden! Thanks to the whole team, everyone who worked on this amd helpen us out. Thank you Mo and Gio for your great energy and for doing this with me. Thank you Marco for all the help!! During Suburbian Summer, two performances will be shown in Flevoland for the first time: the award-winning multimedia dance performance LÍX by Mohamed Yusuf Boss and the musical theatre performance Zanger zonder volk ("Singer Without a People") by Giovanni Brand. Both performances feature live music by ensemble Black Pencil. Beforehand, chef Jim Groot will prepare a matching three-course dinner, shared dining. Fresh from the land, biodynamic, and inspired by the stories from the theatre.
