Sydney’s increasingly extreme and unpredictable weather patterns make us question how we design and make garments around seasons that no longer feel predictable.

It is already difficult to anticipate what people will need and when, particularly within the current economic climate. Yet the fashion industry continues to operate around a cycle that expects multiple collections each year. For many businesses, producing newness remains part of the structure required to maintain visibility, generate sales and sustain the business.

At the same time, small independent creatives are trying to find alternatives. Pre-order and made-to-order systems can help reduce unnecessary production and excess stock, allowing us to make in response to actual demand rather than prediction. But producing in smaller quantities comes with its own contradiction. The cost per garment becomes significantly higher. Materials, labour, sampling and production costs are distributed across fewer pieces, meaning each garment must carry a greater share of the cost and therefore a higher retail price.

So the question becomes, how do we build a garment design and making system that can respond to uncertainty rather than constantly trying to predict it?

Perhaps the challenge is not simply to design another collection for another season, but to reconsider the system itself.
