I‘m in the process of the packing up the apartment in preparation for a move back to California, and I’m feeling a lot of big emotions. Munich has been such a wonderful home for me, my wife, and my daughter. I will miss so many parts of this city, including this little apartment and it’s garden. Change is always hard, and even when there are things to look forward to, I think it’s okay and important to be sad about some parts too. #moving #change #autumn #munich by @eshelton

I put some new Geum cultivars in the woodland garden last weekend. I’m not sure how much longer we’ll be in Munich as my postdoc is finishing up this summer and I am still on the job hunt, but these aven blooms will certainly offer encouraging seasonal color as I submit those applications and prepare those job talks. by @eshelton

Now that August is almost over, it feels like everyone is leaning into the fall vibes. But it is still summer for a bit longer! Here’s a look at the garden from back in July, when the gladiolus hadn’t yet bloomed and the blackberries were still ripening on the vine…

We shared a bottle of Prosecco with an old friend in the backyard this afternoon. Serving as a kind of sanctuary for celebrating such communions, the garden has really pleased me with how it’s turned out this year. It’s my second summer of gardening in this backyard and in the Bavarian climate, and I am still learning so much about what works and what doesn’t. Thanks to @tesskjacobs for taking the video after I broke my toe. Didn’t realize I’d broken it until after I finished putting the lilac, snapdragons, and enchinacea in the ground, but at least it looks good now. Now, I’m resting with my baby sleeping at my side as the thunder and lightning rumbles and flashes outside. Life is good.

Summer in the garden. It’s my first time growing dahlias, sweet peas, zinnias, and salvia, with mixed success. It’s also my first time gardening as a father, bring my baby outside in my arms to pick the flowers. This is a good season. taken in Giesing, Bayern, Germany by @eshelton
