The house is too quiet today and somehow far emptier than I imagined. Nothing could’ve prepared us for how brutal this was all gonna be.

Ru, you were the most curious and affectionate creature I’ve ever seen, a true KING. With 15 years of constant companionship (and never once missing the litter box) you’ve been by my side. You were there for college graduation, a cross-country move, a divorce, a new dad, both dads going back to school, a global pandemic, 9 different apartments, and finally this house, where you brighted our days and never ceased to make us laugh.

Our little family is no longer complete.
When will I stop rolling over in the morning expecting to see your face?
When will I stop seeing you strutting across the room out of the corner of my eye?
When will I stop waiting for you to greet us by bolting up the stairs and performing your customary dozen body rolls on the carpet?

The list of things I will miss about my boy seems to have no end, even your dramatic and pointless yelling is painfully absent.

Though your dads are hurting more than ever, we know you no longer are.

Much like this cake, our nation has many obvious flaws and imperfections 😂😅. The United States is an experiment, we have a lot to be proud of but we can see the abyss in front of us. Every generation has seen profound constitutional challenges, the characteristically American question of “are we still up to this?” Our national anthem isn’t a song about how beautiful our country is…it’s a song about barely making it through the night. The fear that we have inherited something incredible and we’re on the verge of losing it. This is what forces us to wake up every day and chose to believe in the ideals of our country.

This an unfinished experiment, on our anniversary, we need to decide who we wanna be.. are we for some of us…or are we for all of us?

Not being in the mood to celebrate is very understandable. If you’re feeling similarly, check out “The American Experiment” on Netflix and Ken Burns’ “The American Revolution.” I felt great solace in just leaning more and putting today’s challenges into context.
