Update! You can find these Beacons at Walrus!

I fumble towards my deliverable deadlines for the most wonderful client projects before I fly home to Winnipeg to facilitate the final Parol making Lantern Workshop of the year at the @manitobacraftsmuseumandlibrary , I wanted to thank everyone for their patronage, for the opportunities that I have been honoured to a part of this year, for showing up to sales and workshops, for your IG shares and feedback. Small business ownership is not for the faint of heart and I'm learning more about what I'm capable of achieving with each experience. I do need some time to recalibrate and I hope that involves laughing and catching with old friends and family, baking, putting up the tree at my parents house and some cross country skiing. The very thought of it re-energizes me!

Before I leave, I have four of my porcelain Be Calm Beacons with a celedon base sets that I designed to remind us that we must preserve the light within ourselves before we can light the way for others. They are $120 per set and if you need one, please DM as my flight leaves in 48 hours :)

Cultivate peace from within so there something to access in times of need (much like this time of year when earthly creatures are slowing down and we tend to amp up). I remind myself to be hopeful, be gentle and kind as you never know what others are going through especially this time of year.

With love, hope your holidays are warm and cozy,
From my family to yours!

Feeling the ebb and flow of lifes gifts today.
Filled with gratitude.
Giving and receiving,
Measuring in handfuls.

As always, thank you for following along with me.

I've dreamed of using this antique scale in our studio in some form or another, I hope you also enjoy the poetic tipping of the scales as it finds balance.

Shino houses continue to rise and rule my world.

Happy Friday, here are a few photos from Kamni's landscape students clay explorations. Love the way the light responds to their landforms in CAST giving them a sense of how landforms can create shade on their site interventions.

Hope you had the chance to check out the beautiful sunrise this morning and have a great day friends 🧡 by @espiritudesignstudio

This process is new to me so I'm bound to make a few mistakes steps! After straining the grates avocado seed from the dye I placed my test tote in the dye bath and later decided I wanted a mottled look so I took it out and scrunched it up and bound it with string and rubber bands and let it soak overnight. It appears to have a light coral to rust coloring but we shall see when it is fully dried.

I did not apply a mordant to the raw linen because I couldn't source any Aluminum powder (sold in grocery stores to keep pickled pickles crispy) . Instead I tried the soy milk method that binds protein to the plant based linen fibres which coats teh fibres ans tricks it into thinking and acting like animal fibres which absorb natural dyes better. I will repeat an over night soak in the diluted soy bath once it has dried completely out of direct sunlight. I'm preparing a few sample swatches this way.

The crab apple dye is looking like a rich wine and I'm excited to see what type of results we will get from it as its in an abundance this time of year. by @espiritudesignstudio

September made a soft landing, a glaze for our tile has been chosen. In the garden, the roar of the tiger lillies give way to the blush of sedum joy. The climbing Kabocha squash weigh the garden down like a heavy cat sitting on a giant marshmallow signaling a shift of seasons

There will be much to celebrate this September, school begins and in the design studio, making and producing takes precedence, in many ways its also a garden I love to tend ❤️ by @espiritudesignstudio

Join Warehouse Journal and the FAUM Workshop for a 3 hour make-and-take sewing workshop! Participants will create a custom bag designed to carry an edition of the Warehouse Journal.

Led by interdisciplinary artist and designer Diane Espiritu, this hands on workshop invites participants to learn or expand their sewing skills while exploring the relationship between storytelling, making, and design.

Inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction, which imagines stories as vessels carried and shared through time, this workshop asks participants to create their own “carrier bags.” Each participant will sew a bag and receive a copy of one of the past 34 editions of Warehouse Journal to take home inside it.

Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Participants will leave with a handmade bag, a Warehouse Journal publication of their choosing, and new sewing skills to continue their creative practice.

Tickets are $22.73 per person, and spaces are limited, so early registration is encouraged. Save your spot now at the link in our bio! by @espiritudesignstudio

How we went from hoodies, leg warmers, stuffy noses and losing my tomato plants to the frosty evenings to tank tops and sunnies and scorching sun in the last couple weeks of May is beyond me! There were highlights that eclipse the weather like meeting our new neice, a second term with the Faculty of Architecture in the workshop, check out some of the fun projects I get to work on here ;). Breaking ground on our kitchen renovations which inevitably led to scope creep but let's not focus too much on the fact that 3 weeks in we still have the floor tiles and cabinetry to install and the all the demo and prepwork and painting to do...

What I want to remember about this time is the growth and renewal happening around me (including our growing children), its our first spring in our home and I was looking forward to seeing our apple trees bloom. As fleeting as it was, I was not disappointed. Yes, the majority of my bulbs were destroyed by deer, rabbits or frost and who knows what will become of the small fortune I spent on dahlia and peony tubers?! A small win is many of the perennials I purchased on clearance last year are starting off well!

Biking around the neighborhood with R, there were plenty stunning blossoming trees to enjoy around the neighborhood and the green trails have been a prelude to summer we have all been waiting for, I'm also very grateful for last night's 🌧 and thunderstorm. Hope we get more of that with the sunshine too!

How have you been? Do you have any recommendations for summer weekend trips in Manitoba?! If you want to come visit, I just heard that our new counters will be measured by the installer on June 29th so maybe we will have a kitchen mid July? Lol, if you need me I will be in studio or in our backyard hammock.
