A dope new open for my YouTube channel. My latest #VLOG is live.

Things I learned last week while vlogging:

_ I love to start projects.

_ I dislike being in the middle of projects.

_ Improve cooking videos.

_ Improve cooking.

_ Despite logging how much I drink in a day, I’m not sure I’m actually increasing my water intake. How is this possible?

_ The Travis Kelce/Taylor Swift PR campaign has been a nice content break from life.

_ While I like the look of a long to-do list, I do not like the anxiety it creates.

If you feel behind in your life or career, this post should make you feel better about where you’re actually at.

Last week, I read Range by David Epstein, wherein he makes the case that being “all over the place” isn’t a weakness.

The zig zags, false starts, and left turns that can feel like wasted time are the same ones that give us the perspective to connect dots later in ways specialists/experts can’t.

I pulled out 10 ideas that rang true for me, especially as someone who works with stories for a living, and put them together here. If you want the full version, I wrote more about it on my blog.

📖 Checking in from week 3 of my Fall #curriculum. This week, I’m starting on the first book of @beccaxbloom’s “favorite reads”; I’m also learning how to use Miro, learning more about FreshBooks, and listening to @lulumeservey on the @tkppodcast

There’s a lot of advice floating around about how to “do” creative work or run a freelance business—and a lot of it just doesn’t hold up.

This is stuff I hear all the time that makes me cringe a little. Some of it sounds okay until you try to build a sustainable business and then it's...a whole thing. Some of it’s just ridiculous.

This isn’t me being contrarian for fun—it’s just what I’ve seen play out over time. What would you add to the list? by @essayemcreative

Everyone’s trying to spot the AI. No one’s asking if the writing actually works.

Most of the gotcha critiques—headline formulas, repeated phrases, neat little punchlines—aren’t even unique to AI. They’re just what happens when writing becomes mimicry instead of meaning.

I don’t care if someone uses ChatGPT to write a post, or their web copy, or their newsletters.
What matters is whether it meant anything.

If it does, killer.
But it’s not likely to—because it’s trained to do one thing.
And that one thing is not understanding your background, your audience, your point, or your voice.

It might sound smoother. It might even sound smart.
But if it doesn’t connect—if your audience tunes out because it’s stuffed with clichés or repeats itself into oblivion—then it’s not saving you time.
It’s just making the job harder.

Burnout taught me to be careful with my energy.
Freelancing taught me to be intentional with my standards.

I used to think good work meant overdelivering.
Now I know it means knowing when to pull back—so I have something left to give.

There’s a difference between doing something right
and doing something with care.

That’s what I’ve been trying to practice lately.

Life lately, as captured frame by frame in my latest vlog:
• Freelance highs + lows
• A lot of solo talking to camera
• The usual swirl of creativity, doubt, and trying to make something that feels like me

If you’re into behind-the-scenes freelancing, existential spirals, and storytelling with a side of cinnamon oat milk lattes, this one’s for you.

I keep thinking about something ultramarathoner @mountainroche David Roche said after winning 100-mile races at Leadville and Javelina.

He said he didn’t win because he was necessarily more talented or trained harder—he won because he fueled better.

As a runner, I am not great with fueling. I take water on long runs but have only recently packed a gel or two for the ride. Truthfully, I’m not running incredibly far so that’s probably enough but I can go into hard non-running workouts on nothing at all.

And because I listen to his podcast while I work out, naturally it connects to everything. Especially when it comes to my work —creative work, and what we think it takes to keep going.

Swipe for the version that’s been in my head ever since. by @essayemcreative

The past few months have been a mix of 10K training, freelancing, and rethinking how I want to show up in my work. I’ve shifted my focus, reworked my business strategy, and started investing in the things that actually move the needle.

I had a lot of fun putting these together a while back, so we’re bringing them back—this time with Landman. Was it my favorite show lately? No. Did I still half-binge, half-tune-in every Sunday to see where it was headed? Absolutely.

And with a Season 2 allegedly on the way, we’ll get to see what everyone’s up to, if Jerry Jones makes another cameo, and whether Monty lives to close one more deal.

As always, plenty of business lessons (and life, marketing, and general how-not-to-implode lessons) to be had. Swipe through for my favorites ➡️
