Happy National Hispanic Heritage Month! On its final day we wanted to celebrate the first ever Hispanic Barbie! Hispanic Barbie and Black Barbie, both released in 1980, marked a groundbreaking shift in diversifying the Barbie world. As is the nature of any doll, Barbie is an extension of the child playing with her. Through imaginative play, children can feel empowered through exploration and build a healthy self-esteem. Barbie was promoted as the stereotypical white, blonde and blue-eyed all-American girl for decades, influencing how young minds perceive beauty. This is why it’s so important to have inclusive representation in Barbie. When children have the opportunity to play with dolls that mirror their own identities and are exposed to diversity, it fosters empowerment for themselves and empathy for others. You can see the original Hispanic Barbie and her friends at ESSE! #somalittlerock #downtownlittlerock #barbie #hispanicheritagemonth by @essemuseumandstore

Part of our incredible “Barbie and Friends” display from @vintagebarbiemuseum is the groundbreaking debut of the first Black Barbie. So, what better way to celebrate than to explore the women behind her creation? In partnership with @calsronrobinsontheater , a special free screening of “Black Barbie: A Documentary” will be showing at the Ron Robinson Theater on September 23rd at 7:00 pm. This incredible film celebrates the momentous impact three black women at Mattel had on the evolution of the Barbie brand as we know it. Through these charismatic insiders’ stories, the documentary tells the story of how the first Black Barbie came to be in 1980, examining the importance of representation and how dolls can be crucial to the formation of identity and imagination. Emceed by Little Rock’s very own Verda Davenport, you won’t want to miss this night! And a special treat: all movie attendees will receive a ticket for free admission to the museum valid starting September 25. For more information and to register for the screening, visit the link in our bio! Doors open at 6:00 pm and the documentary will promptly begin at 7:00 pm. by @essemuseumandstore
