At this time last year, I had just wrapped up a wonderful year with my 5th graders—only to be told, just a week before school let out, that our campus was closing indefinitely. What was supposed to be a season of celebration—especially with my Master of Arts in Teaching graduation just days away—quickly shifted into survival mode.To make matters more complicated, we were told we had to accept whatever positions were available at our sister schools—if there were any. I remember thinking, “Not again.” I’d have to start all over: new school, new leadership, new students, new families… and maybe not even teaching the subject I loved.Then I saw the roster: Biology. High school. After teaching math for three years, I felt completely out of my element. I panicked. I prayed. I avoided it. For two weeks, I wrestled with it—until I finally signed the contract.And I cried immediately.“Lord, what are you telling me?”Then August 14th came. That first day changed everything. I realized my calling wasn’t designed to make me comfortable. My students walked in full of brilliance—smart, inquisitive, unique, and determined. They didn’t let up. They challenged me, inspired me, and trusted me. We had hard conversations. We had breakthroughs. And through it all, we pushed forward—together.In the midst of this, I also began my doctoral journey, still wondering, “Why did I sign up for all of this?” But again, I heard that same whisper: “Your calling will not allow you to be comfortable.”This year, my students didn’t just show up—they exceeded every goal. They showed me what resilience, brilliance, and transformation look like. We laughed, we cried, we learned, we grew.This honor is more than a title. It’s a testament to the power of culturally responsive and trauma-informed teaching. It’s a reminder that purpose always leads the way—even through discomfort.Cheers to Year 5. Cheers to growth. SEMESTER 1 DUMP:Maneuvering as a millennial educator, PhD student, mentor, mom and grade level chair was challenging to say the least but I made it. •I ended my 1st semester as a doctoral student with a 3.5. •I met the regions data targets for Interim Assessment 1 for Biology.•I exceeded the goal for school/classroom culture.•I advocated for myself and others.•I found my true calling—teaching/researching culturally responsive teaching strategies to at-risk youth along with mentorship.What’s next?
