Estonia's domestic security agency Kapo has concluded with certainty that Russian intelligence services commissioned the arson attack on Milrem Robotics' premises in Tallinn on 15 August — the first Russian-sponsored attack in Estonia this year to be successfully carried out.

Three Latvian citizens were arrested and transferred to Estonian custody. The Kremlin called the accusation groundless.

Milrem supplies THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles to Ukraine. According to Kapo's director-general, Russia recruits unwitting proxies — people who often don't even know they're working for Russian intelligence — and the threat to defence companies and Ukraine supporters across Europe is growing.

Estonia will play a leading role in efforts to establish a special tribunal for Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Aino Lepik von Wirén, Estonia’s ambassador to the Council of Europe, has been elected to chair the working group preparing the tribunal, which is intended to prosecute those bearing the greatest responsibility for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

The tribunal has not yet begun work, but participating countries are continuing preparations for its launch.

Estonia continues to rank among the world’s strongest education systems.
The latest PISA results place Estonian students in the global top 10 in science, mathematics, reading and computational thinking.
But behind the impressive rankings are some challenges: reading performance has declined, and teacher shortages are putting increasing pressure on the education system.

Estonia's economic recovery is holding steady. According to a preliminary estimate, GDP grew by 2.1% in Q2 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier — continuing the recovery at a pace similar to Q1. Good news for a small economy that has had a turbulent few years.

An Estonian meat company posted a BBQ ad and started a public debate.
Rannarootsi Lihatööstus published an AI-generated Facebook ad showing two men grilling on a beach — wearing Ukrainian flag t-shirts, with plumes of smoke in the background — and a tagline about caramelised onions turning sweet. The company says it was just selling a product. The problem: in Estonian slang, "onion" can be a derogatory term for Russians, derived from the onion-dome shape of Orthodox church turrets. Its CEO says he only found out about the slang connotation of "onion" after posting it.
Not everyone bought that. Pro-Russia politicians called it a provocation. Pro-Ukraine politicians called it a reason to go shopping.

Along with Christmas, jaaniõhtu (23 June) and jaanipäev (24 June) are the most important holidays in the Estonian calendar, a celebration that predates Christianity, survived Soviet occupation and remains woven into the country's sense of itself.
The rituals are ancient: bonfires to ward off evil spirits, jumping over the flames for good luck, searching the forest for the mythical fern flower that blooms only on this night. The longest light of the year, spent with family, fire and song. Estonia didn't just keep these traditions alive. It made them national.

Estonia's State debt stood at around €2.5 billion in 2019. By 2025 it had reached €10 billion. By 2030, it could exceed €20 billion — and with it, annual interest payments rising to around €650 million. That's enough to fund three large universities, or Estonia's entire domestic security apparatus. The Bank of Estonia agrees with the IMF's assessment and is calling for a cross-party agreement — similar to those in Sweden and Finland — to put public finances back on a sustainable footing.

Estonian wages are growing — and the gap between sectors is striking.
The median gross salary in Estonia reached €1,753 a month in Q1 2026, up 6% from the same period last year. The average gross salary came in higher, at €2,135.
At the top end, information and communication workers averaged €3,821 a month. At the bottom, accommodation and food service workers took home an average of €1,337.
Same country, very different pay cheques.

Estonian households are wealthier than ever — but the gains aren't evenly spread.
The net wealth of the average Estonian household rose to €103,300 in 2024, up from €66,200 in 2021 — a real increase of 16% after adjusting for inflation. estonianworld
Real estate remains the backbone of that wealth. But one number cuts through the good news: the richest 5% of households own 40% of all net assets. estonianworld
A rising tide — but not quite lifting all boats equally.

Pärnu has formally expressed its interest in hosting Estonia's planned multifunctional arena, arguing that its location between Tallinn and Riga, its future Rail Baltica connection and its strong tourism infrastructure make it a strong candidate for major international events.
The proposed site sits near the Pärnu River and the future Rail Baltica passenger station — and the city says it already has the hospitality backbone to support it, with more than 5,000 hotel beds, spas, restaurants and experience hosting large-scale events.
