At Värska Farm Museum, we learned how to make traditional Seto 🇪🇪 cheese called, sõir 🧀. Sõir isn’t just any normal cheese— this traditional Setomaa cheese is so culturally important that the name became an EU-protected geographical indication in 2021. Seto sõir is so tied to this region that its name is protected by the EU — kind of like Champagne in France. There is no other place in the world besides Setomaa, where you can get Seto sõir 🧀 #estonia #visitestonia #traditionalcheese #eesti #cheesemaking

Rye bread is more than just a typical bread in Estonia. It’s a tradition, an art, and a way to ensure you will not go hungry. At MUHK / Estonian Agricultural Museum in Tartu County, I got to learn how traditional rye bread is made by hand — and of course we had to enjoy it warm with homemade butter. 🥖🧈. After learning how to make rye bread by hand, I have such an appreciation now every time I see this bread in Estonia— espically learning its importance and significance to Estonian culture! #visitestonia #estonia #ryebread #estonianhistory #traditional

While driving down the Onion Route in Varnja, Estonia, I saw a van full of church ladies leaving the church. I knew I had to make a quick U-turn and film it because it was such a sweet and picturesque moment.

I am such a sucker for everything old-fashioned. When I first came to Estonia, I thought the whole country was still in this era—old-fashioned clothes, scarves on their heads, and the old way of life. Little did I know that Estonia was one of Europe’s leading digital societies. 😅🤭

So, when I saw these little grannies wearing headscarves and dressing in the old traditional way, I gasped. I finally found it! I finally got to observe the old European way of life that I’d been craving to see with my own eyes.

I didn’t know I’d find it among the Old Believers, a religious community more than 300 years old. Can you imagine the conversations coming from this van? Lots of “da, da, da” (“yes, yes, yes”).

Stay tuned for the next Reel as I go inside the Varnja Old Believers Prayer House. 🇪🇪
