I had the privilege of recreating a portrait of Frank Ambrose Beach. It was unveiled during the ESU Music Program's Gala (@esumusicprogram) last Saturday.

Beach was the head of the Music department in the early 20th century back when Emporia State University was called Kansas State Normal School. We are now celebrating the 100th anniversary of Beach Music Hall, the home of ESU's current Music Program. The building was built in 1926, but was named Beach Music Hall after Frank Ambrose Beach in 1956. That was when the original painting by an artist named "I. Foster" was created. Please let me know if anybody out there knows anything about I. Foster, because I couldn't find any information about this artist.

Unfortunately, Foster's painting was vandalized several decades ago with a large "X" slashed through Beach's face and a few other punctures. Dawn McConkie, a colleague in the Music Program, found the painting and brought it to my attention. Rather than attempting to retouch a fragile, damaged painting, I offered to create a brand new one, and fortunately my colleagues in the School of Visual and Performing Arts were on board with that plan.

Amazingly, Rebekah Curry from ESU's Libraries was able to track down the old black and white photo that I. Foster must have used as reference for the 1956 portrait, so I was also able to use that as a reference. I had another colleague in Music, Joshua Donaldson, help out by being a living model for Beach. The color appears to have faded in the original painting so it was helpful to observe flesh tones of a living person to help enhance the vitality in the new painting.

Keen observers may notice that I painted the stripes on his tie black and gold to match the black and gold frame, and of course the school colors of ESU.

Special thanks to Dawn McConkie, David Sharlow, Joshua Donaldson, Allan Comstock, and Rebekah Curry for your help in making this happen. We plan to install the new painting in Beach Hall soon! taken in Emporia State University by @esuartprogram

Projects in Glass student Alyssa Carney finished up this Fantastic Dragon! The form was first modeled out of clay, then rubber molded and used lost wax casting to finish out the process. Nice job Alyssa!!

One Dark and Starry Night... is an ESU Art History Association Exhibition featuring the artwork of Kansas undergraduate students through the lens of historical artwork. The show will be on display from September 28-October 25, 2026 in the Eppink Gallery in King Hall at Emporia State University.

Exhibition Info:
This take on a familiar phrase brings up memories of stories, particularly stories that invoke vivid imagery. Conversely, visual art can be used to tell stories of its own and invoke emotion and memory in the viewer. The Emporia State University Art History Association (AHA) invites submissions for our annual juried exhibition, One Dark and Starry Night…

We encourage artists to submit work that relates to narrative or storytelling in some way. These works should use story as the focus and can certainly incorporate
text as well.

I am so incredibly proud of this project and can’t wait to share it with everyone involved! I began this project in collaboration with House of Morrow and Emporia High School almost a year ago, and here it is in print! This past spring, my Print and Gender students taught EHS students in graphic design and advanced glass forming courses about various topics related to print culture and gender. They then worked with them and guided them through printmaking processes (lino cuts!). Some students worked digitally or in glass as well. This summer, several of us worked together on the publication and exhibition! Meadowlark Press is responsible for this gorgeous book. Artwork by both ESU and EHS students is now on display in the Inking & Thinking exhibit in the Eppink Gallery at King Hall and this beautiful book is now available to the participants! This project was generously funded by the PK Inspirational Art Fund, which supports hands-on learning opportunities for ESU Art students. This project did double duty and supported EHS students too! All these students now have an exhibition and publication credit to their names, which is fantastic. Come check out the exhibit tomorrow at the reception during the Emporia First Friday Art Walk, September 4 from 5-8 pm. Copies of the book are available for purchase at the gallery. The exhibit will also be on display through September 18.

My many thanks to everyone involved in this project! This was such fun and I am so proud of our Emporia students! by @esuartprogram
