I had the privilege of recreating a portrait of Frank Ambrose Beach. It was unveiled during the ESU Music Program's Gala (@esumusicprogram) last Saturday.

Beach was the head of the Music department in the early 20th century back when Emporia State University was called Kansas State Normal School. We are now celebrating the 100th anniversary of Beach Music Hall, the home of ESU's current Music Program. The building was built in 1926, but was named Beach Music Hall after Frank Ambrose Beach in 1956. That was when the original painting by an artist named "I. Foster" was created. Please let me know if anybody out there knows anything about I. Foster, because I couldn't find any information about this artist.

Unfortunately, Foster's painting was vandalized several decades ago with a large "X" slashed through Beach's face and a few other punctures. Dawn McConkie, a colleague in the Music Program, found the painting and brought it to my attention. Rather than attempting to retouch a fragile, damaged painting, I offered to create a brand new one, and fortunately my colleagues in the School of Visual and Performing Arts were on board with that plan.

Amazingly, Rebekah Curry from ESU's Libraries was able to track down the old black and white photo that I. Foster must have used as reference for the 1956 portrait, so I was also able to use that as a reference. I had another colleague in Music, Joshua Donaldson, help out by being a living model for Beach. The color appears to have faded in the original painting so it was helpful to observe flesh tones of a living person to help enhance the vitality in the new painting.

Keen observers may notice that I painted the stripes on his tie black and gold to match the black and gold frame, and of course the school colors of ESU.

Special thanks to Dawn McConkie, David Sharlow, Joshua Donaldson, Allan Comstock, and Rebekah Curry for your help in making this happen. We plan to install the new painting in Beach Hall soon!
