2026 has been a tough ol’ year. I know I keep saying that, but up until about four weeks ago, the punches kept coming. I’m absolutely battered, but hopeful things are looking up. And here we are, at 34 - my mid-thirties! I’ve been thinking a lot about friendship, and the shapes they take. And about how we hold on to each other, and how we don’t. And about how life marches on, relentlessly. I’ve had enough of being sad this year. Here’s to more belly laughs, more silly dances, more hanging out with one another, more kissing, more hugging, more connecting 🥂 I promise I’ll try to take more photos with people! 💕 taken in London, United Kingdom by @etakate

Go to @honsbbq . Order everything on the menu. Order more of that incredible pork belly - I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a more melty, tender cube of pork, ever. Order more ox cheek too, because that stuff is unctuous as hell. Go back again and again (I know I will!) 🥩

I don’t know why anyone goes to Notting Hill when St John’s Wood is just as pretty and, more importantly, is where No.FortyNine is: the new all-day bakery, bistro and wine bar by the team behind Cinder (which is also amazing and just a short walk away!). I was lucky to be #invited last week and had such a great time. It’s an elegant space yet relaxed and great for bigger groups, especially because there really is something for everyone - but without the menu being overloaded and cumbersome. Instead, Head Chef Ella Williams (who is super cool and only like 26!) has created a tight, snappy and wonderful menu. You really have to order those cornbread madeleines, I can’t stop thinking about them. If prawns are on the menu, get them - if not, the ceviche is perfection. Steak Haché is a crowd-pleaser, but I was genuinely so impressed by the truffle pasta, which is light and fragrant, not at all overpowering and so delicious. To finish, the Baby Guinness sundae is so decadent and a real treat, but I will absolutely be going back for that Crack pie 🥧 by @etakate

Saturday brunch in @hoko.london on Brick Lane genuinely felt like we were stepping into a classic Hong Kong cafe with macaroni ham soup and Hong Kong milk teas. I was loving the Cantonese music, essential table condiments and utensils, and the 80s style interiors. I had a quick breakfast of tomato egg noodle soup - the very large portion surprised me - but will be back for satay beef and French toast next time!

I first tried @barang_london when @tomgeoffrey was doing supper clubs in April 2025 and knew he was onto something really special - so when he landed his residency at The Globe Tavern in Borough Market last November, I was thrilled and immediately convinced Broadsheet to let me write about it. I finally had the chance to go back and eat at Barang, just 7 weeks before their residency officially ends (but I suspect a permanent spot is in the works, thank god!). It is as delicious as I remember, full of really bright, zesty flavours that are so well balanced (the plea trei sauce!! Mouthwatering) and authentic to the cuisine. It is simply a must-go, if you can still get a booking - otherwise, you’ll have to wait and see where they end up. Either way, it is worth it!

Had the best time at @thehighlandladdie in Leeds with @eightyfouragency yesterday! I’ve been thinking about the mustard menu and the sausage roll ever since… Be warned, there’s a 4-5 month wait time for bookings but boy, is it worth it 🍺🍻 The food scene in Leeds is really exciting right now, can’t wait to explore more of it.

Had the best time visiting @pourchoiceswinefair this weekend! It was so fun getting to know sustainable British winemakers and seeing all the vibrant and delicious wines they are producing 🍷Shoutouts to my faves of the day @sandridgebarton @saddlegoosewine @northern_wine @capreolusdistil 😍 Also snacked on the most delectable jambon beurre from @jumicheeselondon (sorry, spelt it wrong in the vid!) 🧀

March was rough as fuck. Luckily, some very good food was devoured between all the tears and feelings of “fuck it, should we run away and live off the land?” Here’s what I loved eating last month:
1. Went to the @aussiebeefandlambuk showcase and sampled some of the best steaks I’ve ever had. I’m usually all for local produce (and still am!) but it was really interesting to learn about Australia’s produce and see how good it is for myself 🥩
2 and 3. Went to Rome and ate my weight in pasta. Standouts were these uber tender, juicy meatballs and stuffed courgette in a simple but mouth-watering tomato sauce and a cacio e pepe that looked deceivingly heavy - it was actually a dream to eat 🍝
4. Adobada and cabeza tacos at @sonora.ldn - I need to go back and try the whole menu 🌮
5. The most delicious prawn toast bites by @cafe.kowloon for the launch of @toothsome_magazine ‘s second issue! Such a brilliant mag, so many great indie food zines out at the moment and I’m loving it 🍤
6. Another prawn moment, this time it’s peppered prawns and pickled spring onions from @marie_mitchell_ x @cubitthouse dinner series. The recipe is in her beautiful book KIN, I need to cook this soon! 🦐
7. Visit to @paposbagels was v fruitful 🥯
8. Was lucky enough to check out the launch of @empiretaverne8 right next to Hackney Empire and get a taste of legendary burgers - can all canapes be this size please? Going back for full-size burgers and the greenest, freshest cocktail ever v soon 🍔
9 and 10. This cucumber salad at @palomarsoho is my favourite salad right now, I could eat it every single day. Thanks to @ellenrowlinson for our little catch up over this and other delicious dishes, plus a jaunt to @themulwray for a cheeky vermouth cocktail, yum 🥒

I started this T-shirt at the end of October 2025 and finished it at the end of February 2026. Four whole months of knitting with 2.5mm needles with lace weight yarn - quite a mission. It’s a bittersweet garment as I finished it on the day I realised I would have to say goodbye to the lovely Bertie. So while the finishing of this T-shirt was not the triumphant moment I hoped it would be, the making of it is a record of my last four months with my beloved boy. It’s special to me, which probably just goes to show I’m an overly sentimental Cancer 🦀🐈‍⬛

Anyway, I worry this T-shirt is too oversized. I’ve worn it a few times since finishing and am still playing around with the styling as I really love the colour 🍊 I also really don’t want to unravel it haha but who knows, I might anyway and knit it again in a smaller size. It’s made with Knitting for Olive Pure Silk, which feels so softand drapes amazingly, working really well with the simplicity of the pattern.

Bertie 🐾 ??? - 2026
Over the last few days, we discovered that Bertie had been hiding secrets from us. The first is that he was actually an old man - the vets believe he was at least 4 or 5 years older than we thought, which would have made him 12 or 13 this year instead of 8!

The other secret is that he was so, so ill. He was in heart failure. His lungs were filled with fluid. He was in the early stages of kidney disease. He was dying.

One week ago, we were dancing in the kitchen, slipping him mackerel that he happily scoffed, everyone calling him over and petting him and holding him. The king of the castle. Less than two days later, I couldn’t even get him to eat a bit of chicken, his absolute favourite thing in the world. Yesterday, we said goodbye. The speed at which he deteriorated has left me reeling. My heart is broken. I still can’t believe this happened.

Bertie brought us immense joy and laughter over the last five years. He made me laugh so much, even on the last day. This is the first time he’s really made me cry. We thought we’d have at least five more. We love you, Bertie.
