10 steps to perfect meditation posture šŸ‘‡

Step 1. Find a seat

Grab a pillow or cushion. Ideally 6ā€ or taller. When your butt is higher than your knees, it reduces knee pain and promotes a natural inward curve in your lower back.

Step 2. Choose a base

You can choose between full lotus, half lotus, or a classic cross cross. Whatever you find comfortable. In this video, I’m demonstrating half lotus.

Step 3. Place your hands

The classic position is to lay the back of your hand right in the cup of your ankle or lap. Then lay the back of your other hand on top. Finally, touch the tips of your thumbs.

Step 4. Elongate your spine

Do this by Imagining an invisible string pulling you up from the crown of your head. Dont get stiff though.

Step 5. Level out your shoulders

This one is simple. Just make sure one shoulder isn’t higher than the other.

Step 6. Level your chin with the floor

This ensures that your head doesn’t start falling back if you get sleepy.

Step 7. Position your tongue

Rest your tongue as naturally as possible behind your top front teeth. It reduces saliva production so you have one less thing to be distracted by.

Step 8. Lower your eyelids

Here choose between closed eyes OR letting in a sliver of light. I close all the way because it’s easier to focus but letting in some light helps you practice integration with daily life. Worth trying but make sure it’s blurry.

Step 9. Close mouth and relax lips

Step 10. Breathe through your nose

At this point you just want to let your breath flow naturally. You don’t need to change anything. Over time it tends to naturally become more soft and gentle.

Now you’re ready to meditate!

With all that said it’s important to remember that this is all so you can be able to park your body in a supportive way. Like parking a car at the grocery store. You can forget about it for a little while and focus on something else.

So if you are experiencing bad back or knee pain, it’s encouraged to use a chair or lay on your bed. One other option for the knees is to add a rolled up towel, hoodie, or yoga block under each knee.

My mind is a garden.
I pull out the weeds.
And water the seeds.
It takes time, love, energy…
But my garden can grow…
And be what I want it to be.
Fruitful, sunny, and green.
Good habits alive.
Bad habits free.
More room for love.
More room to be.
I share the fruits with those around me.
If you wanna get your hands dirty,
Come tend to your garden,
And meditate with me. (via zoom)
Every Friday at 5 PM pst.
All are welcome, and yeah it’s free.
Comment ā€œgardenā€, I’ll send you the link.
Love,
Ethan

P.S. This 13 week guided meditation series is just a small part of a larger 100 day meditation challenge. Learn more here: @dailymeditationchallenge by @ethanatteo

some clips from our last days in japan! didn’t want to waste the last couple days editing so I waited till I got home. it was honestly spectacular. the people were so sweet, the food was yum, and the culture was beautiful to get to know. my hope was to share this experience with you guys so you could get a taste of it too.

my main takeaway is that, as wonderful as japan is, we can find just as much beauty in our daily lives. leaving town isn’t gonna fix anything. it will be fun and new and novel, then we adjust. the trick is to keep practicing seeing the beauty in the ordinary so we never have to go outside of ourselves to be happy.

thanks for joining me on this adventure! šŸ›¬ taken in 京都 Kyoto, Japan by @ethanatteo

Yesterday, I did a talk about how meditation has changed my life — we call them MedTalks as a spin off on the famous TedTalks haha. It was challenging but felt so rewarding to see it played live for everyone. Secretly though, I didn’t make it for them, I made it for you. This talk is for people who haven’t meditated before, or for people who have tried it but gave up, or for people simply wondering, what the heck is REALLY the point of meditation. Full video will be posted on the @threejewelsnyc Youtube Channel but for now here’s a lil clip. Thanks for capturing this @wakeupist. 🫶 taken in New York City by @ethanatteo

Graduation weekend yay! I’m officially a meditation teacher! But here’s the thing. As much as I’d like to say, ā€œI’m totally happy and healed!ā€ after 200 hours of mind training — that’s absolutely not the case.

Today, I had a ton of anxiety and sadness come up. As seemingly wonderful this day appeared on paper, I felt a bit left out from the rest of my class in NYC. Everyone was hugging and dancing while I’m looking at a zoom screen like šŸ™‚.

Meanwhile, I SHOULD feel good, right? I mean I’m not the only one online. And they GENUINELY made sure that we felt as supported and loved as humanly possible online… But that’s how I felt.

That’s when all the mind training came into action. Because, Instead of latching onto these feeling as my identity and beating myself up about it, I was able to observe the feeling come up and reframe it.

I thought to myself:

ā€œI’m feeling jealous and sad. This is simply an old habit arising. That’s normal. We’re okay. ā¤ļø How can I use this opportunity to plant NEW seeds for better habits to arise later? How about placing my mind and FOCUSING on love. Let’s choose to feel sympathetic joy for everyone that DID get to come together and celebrate in person.ā€

And so I did exactly that! Within seconds, my heart began to soften and mind began to relax… Those original negative feelings were flickering on and off as the graduation ceremony went on, but it got better. Not perfect, but better. And next time I run into conditions that make those feelings arise, I’ll continue to plant those seeds of moving my mind to see the beauty where I once found pain.

Meditation is simply the training ground so that when you DO run into situations like this, you have the tools and practice to notice your thoughts come up, and focus on moving your mind to what best serves your well being and others.

I have SO much more to learn… and so much more work to do… But for now, It’s about rejoicing and feeling good about the progress I’ve made so far. 🄳

P.S. @wakeupist thank you for showing me what’s possible when we work on our mind. Your boundless joy is unbelievably inspiring. Thank you for lovingly challenging me too. You are a spectacular teacher. šŸ«‚ā¤ļø by @ethanatteo
