Steel toes, tough skin, blinking dirt out of my eyes.

Sore arms and early mornings.

This will make my Father proud.

To be a man is to carry the weight.

But my Father was made from porcelain.

And cracks lead to chips

That could not be repaired.

My porcelain Father had a son made of glass.

And his glass stayed full, though his cup ran dry.

To give, to do, to endure.

Tough as nails, hard like steel, like father, like son.

A man’s hands are thick like mittens.

Scar tissue repurposed into armour.

Lost in the translation between labour and love.

I will not be a father.

I will not raise a son.

WHAT IS UTOPIAN FUTURISM?

IT IS NOT SCI-FI

Sci-fi can certainly function as an effective genre for exploring futurism, but they are not one and the same!

Utopian Futurism focuses on re-framing reality — making changes to the ‘rules’ of the world to imagine alternative histories, experiences and possibilities to our existence.

Utopian Futurist films can be set in any time period, so long as you CHANGE THE WORLD of your story. The only requirement is imagination.

What would things look like IF they were already different? What opportunities exist for your community on the other side of this transition?

🌟Ethan White is a non-binary artist based in Vancouver, BC who hails from Amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton, Alberta–Treaty 6 Territory). Their work spans the mediums of film, photography, dance, digital art, drawing, and tackles subjects of humanity’s relationship with technology, gender identity, and the intersections these topics share with spirituality. Ethan believes in the ability of art to affect social change, and strives to side-step the obtuse pretentiousness of gallery culture by creating works that are both covertly challenging, yet entertaining enough to remain widely accessible. Ethan aspires to lend helping hands in amplifying the marginalised voices on Turtle Island and beyond. @ethanuelle
