![[Link in bio]: The Motion Pictures Film Festival is a new local event featuring short films focused on the concept of utopian futurism. The festival is in association with the Chocolate Milk Art Collective. The group describe themselves as “an established film production company, producing thought provoking and engaging works that can travel around the world being recognized for their unique style and tone.”
Ethan White is a filmmaker, director, artist, and creative director for the festival. They were interviewed by The Peak at the festival. White described the motion picture festival as “an initiative to provide local working-class and migrant youth the opportunity to change the dystopian narratives present in our contemporary media landscape, while creating the opportunity for real-time community organizing in the process.”
The festival features five shorts, each “allowing us to imagine liberated futures that we can start working toward in our everyday lives as radicalized youth.” Asked what makes each short experimental and unique, White described the films as an “attempt to fundamentally break free from traditional storytelling conventions as a part of their imaginative processes, creating a viewing experience full of innovation, highly personal community care, and oddity.”
Dystopian stories are quite common in pop culture, but utopian less so. When asked why, White speculated the reasons are “multifaceted.” They think “a part of it is a general bitterness that pervades our media landscape in the west.” They went on, “any screenwriting class in [Turtle Island] will tell you that conflict is the core of your story. We tend to remember paintings of Neanderthals with spears rather than baskets for gathering and harvesting. In our obsession with conflict, we find ourselves in a self-perpetuating cycle. When dystopia is all we see, it becomes hard to imagine anything else.”
