I have many tattoos. I do not come by them impulsively. There is some truth to it being addictive, but I am not impetuous and have a strict criterion for what I will permanently etched into my flesh.

The following story may sound like a contradiction to that, but trust me it is not.

After standing in a couple of Weird Al VIP lines, my reverence for him doesn’t even hold a candle to some, but I am a fan.

Dare to be Stupid was my first album. Not my first Weird Album; my FIRST album. It was also my first concert at the Starlight Theater when I was 8. He opened for The Monkees, whom I was also excited to see having seen them on Nickelodeon. I didn’t understand the concept of syndication so was certainly confused when these very old men took the stage that night. It didn’t matter because I had just seen Weird Al. He came into the theater to sign autographs. I went up and waited. They dimmed the lights for folks to take their seats. He turned and brushed past me.

“I’ll never wash my arm again!”

This summer after seeing him I decide maybe I should get a tattoo that honors him. It felt right. Nothing crazy, and not in a conspicuous area of my body. Every tattoo I’ve gotten is either for a sober milestone or a tribute to someone who has passed. Each one had a considerable thought process.

I thought “if I get his signature, I’ll get THAT tattooed.” But that didn’t feel right. So, I tried to think of one of my most favorite quotes. I thought of my favorite song, Dare to be Stupid.

“Mashed potatoes can be your friends.”

Instantly, I was sure. Mashed potatoes are my all-time favorite food. Whenever forced to answer the hypothetical “last meal before execution” discussion the answer was always emphatically “mashed potatoes.”

Weird Al is the nicest human. He’s so talented and smart and funny and humble on top of it all. It’s happy memory from a childhood that wasn’t always the happiest. I’m caring for my inner child now, and I’m feeding her mashed potatoes. taken in The Factory Troy by @ethanullman

I highly recommend everyone attends a Weird Al concert with a celebrity who also happens to be one of your lifelong favorite comedians that you work with and are now friends with - at least once. (So, what are you waiting for?!) Anyone who follows us on social media, or has received a holiday card from us knows our beloved cat, Koogins. Earlier this year, she developed a cancerous mass on her left eye, which led to removal of that eye and all the cancerous tissue.

In our household, we firmly believe that bodies change, but your worth does not. 🫶🏻 That being said, Koogins could still use some reassurance that she’s cuter than ever, so please leave our sweetest girl some love! 💖 by @ethanullman
