✨Do you live your life in the lobby or the banquet hall?✨

This week wrapped up the third and final September Ethics with Emily sessions, and boy did it get me thinking. If you aren’t familiar, Ethics with Emily was a program I created at Vanderbilt Hillel for students to have a space to explore Judaism’s biggest questions and how they connect to our everyday lives.

Some perspectives I gained from our conversation were:
✨the idea that the lobby and banquet halls in our lives are always changing
✨sometimes the act of being present in the lobby will allow us to enjoy the banquet hall even more
✨ the parallels between this concept with preparing for the Jewish new year next week

This Shabbat, I invite you to check out this week’s newsletter to dive a little bit deeper into this question. (hits your inbox at 12pm PT!) I hope whichever you pick, the room is filled with stillness and reflection, connection and joy, or a little bit of both. (bonus points if you subscribe to the newsletter in the link in bio!)

And with that, Shabbat Shalom✨

Ethically,
Emily

Back in May, I led a workshop called “Crafting Your Morning Ritual” at the @wrj1913 conference in New Orleans. In Judaism, there are daily blessings traditionally said in the morning. These blessings cover everything from gratitude for waking up, having bodies that move, and yes, even going to the bathroom! (learned that from @eitansnydermusic in 2018)

The goal of the workshop was to spark inspiration for a morning ritual that works for YOU. Not everyone is a morning person, but what is one thing you can add to your routine in the morning that is something just for you?? Making your bed counts!🛏️✔️

My go to morning ritual is a 5 minute meditation, reading the daily reading in the Journey to the Heart, and pulling a card from one of my many card decks. If I have the time, I’ll journal for a few minutes, and if not I’ll save it for later.☀️📓📚✨

What’s your morning ritual, if you have one? If you don’t, what’s one that you’ve been wanting to try? Maybe this is the push you needed! Share in the comments, I’d love to know!👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

this shabbat you’re invited on a play date!🛝🫶🤭

✨when was the last time you connected to your inner child? how do they like to play?

my latest “adulting is hard” feeling sparks the question, why is it so difficult to play once we become adults?👷‍♀️👷👷‍♂️

let’s change the narrative, what is one way you will PLAY this Shabbat! Throw your playful answers in the comments👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻and check out this weeks newsletter in the link in bio!

what’s bringing you joy lately???

Because maybe, that feeling has been hard to come by lately.

“I went to a Bar Mitzvah a couple of weeks ago, and the Rabbi shared a teaching from the Talmud. In this story there is a wedding processional and a funeral processional at a crossroads. The question is, which processional should go first? One may assume the funeral, that’s the right thing to do. When actually, the wedding processional should go first. Why? Because joy should take precedence over death.”

“As I transition out of the woods, it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by what comes next. To not have nature reminding me to stay slow, to stop and admire, and to enjoy the breeze when it hits. Transitioning out of the woods, out of vacation mode, also means that “normal” is coming back soon too. Whatever the heck normal is?”

S T I L L N E S S

has been on my mind lately

when was the last time you gave yourself permission to be still?

In a world that makes us feel like we have to speed up to be successful, stillness feels out of reach, impossible, not good enough.

I’m learning that with stillness comes growth, gratitude, rest, and renewal.

✨This is your reminder to find time and space to be still, and enjoy it, embrace it, and don’t wait too long to do it again and again✨ by @ethicallyemily

I learned a teaching once that talked about the three different types of light in Judaism:

✨Shabbat candles represent the internal light, the personal pause, rest and restoration
✨Hanukkah candles represent the external light, putting menorahs on display for others to see and celebrate
✨the braided Havdalah candle is the combination of the internal and external blending together

Tonight as you transition out of Shabbat, into Havdalah, and into the final moments of Hanukkah, think about what each of these lights represent in your own internal, external, and intertwined life.

✨Happy Hanukkah✨

❤️💫🍁☀️☺️

I like to describe Elul as an entire month devoted to what we typically do during the time period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, repentance, forgiveness, etc. Elul is an entire month dedicated to deep introspection. Elul offers time for us to practice t'shuvah. A concept that means to return. We have a month to return to ourselves, check in with ourselves, and think about how we want our personal fall leaves to change colors.

For me, this month has been challenging for me. I’ve realized that I’ve been off my own self-care game and have been feeling completely out of balance. The perfectionist in me is coming out and I’ve been moving a million miles a minute. Rest? IDK her. After some real low moments, I realized I have not been living by my own values. It's time to get back to that version of myself. As I navigate a new semester and a new routine, I’ve been working hard to be more intentional with how I prioritize my time and honor what I need to show up as my best self.

This Shabbat, I offer you some reflection questions so you can work to return to your best self.

✨As you transition into a new season, what are you going to let fall ?

✨Imagine the version of yourself that you want to be this season. How will you get there?

💫Challenge: Go out in nature and find a magical space to witness the change from summer to fall. For me, the sunset makes me feel closer to that version of myself I’m trying to get back to. What is that for you?

Shabbat Shalom❤️
