This post as serves as promo for Sundays Pebbles party šŸ—æ

I’m chewing gum while I type this.
I’m chewing gum in the videos.
I feel connected to my past self in this present moment.
Is crazy how much present time we spend capturing and broadcasting the past.

ICYMI #2 for the week — for my April radio show, I covered the production catalog of Charles Noel a.k.a. Archetype. ( @arch_typ ) Charles’ productions are both adventurous in their reach and contemporary sounding despite their age. Musically, I showcased styles like jungle, techno, tribal, broken beat, EBM, house and more.

Charles will be playing our Juneteenth party on Friday…his first time playing out in NYC in years. He’s going to do a live set + DJ set so we’ll be blessed with his various modes of expression irl.

I highly recommend and I’m personally very excited for it! taken in The Lot Radio by @eto.ano

We’re partnering with Palestine Justice Effort and DJs Against Apartheid for our event next Friday, June 19th.

Palestine Justice Effort is a charity partner that creates merchandise and uses the profits from those merchandise sales to provide funds for relief efforts based in Palestine, Yemen, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Somalia & Sudan, helping support thousands over the recent years.

Started in Columbus, Ohio, PJE moved to Brooklyn in 2024. They will be selling merch on-site at Good Room on the 19th.

Learn more about them @palestinejusticeeffort

DJs Against Apartheid is a campaign drawing from the lineage of the cultural boycott of the South African Apartheid system that works to unite artists, workers, and members of nightlife communities to fight for Palestinian liberation. The campaign does this by leveraging cultural spaces as a commons for facilitating resistance, fostering dialogue, providing care, and establishing resources to aid the victims of occupation and genocide, sustain collective action, and broaden political education.

Members of DAA will be on-site at Good Room to distribute info about the campaign and fundraise for their mutual-aid initiatives, which you can learn more about on their resource page on their website.

Hi - It’s Spurge. Good Room asked me to curate a lineup for Juneteenth and I put together one that I’m geeked about. It represents, to me, the diversity of black talent in North America spanning the past to the present.

In the Bad Room, we have 90s techno / jungle heavyweight Archetype making a rare appearance to start the night. Charles Noel / Archetype built his career in Columbus, Ohio alongside Titonton Duvante and Todd Sines, starting his label the 21/22 corporation and ele_mental collective, heavily contributing to the canon of midwest techno. An unmistakable sound of blackness threads itself through all forms of his music. I really like this description from a discogs comment from Kiernan Laveaux exhalting Archetypes music as ā€œenthralling studies in the drum!ā€

Bookworms will be opening up the Good Room with a live set. A seemingly infinitely prolific producer and absolute pillar behind the 2010s Brooklyn electronic scene, Bookworms’ music sears together techno, punk, IDM, ambient, electro and more and more and more into a psychedelic deluge of ā€œstrange beautiful shitā€. Come early to watch him conjure up some improvised magic live.

Next, in the Bad Room we a B2B that makes tooooo much sense. Sometimes two people’s sensibilities signal such a possibility of harmony that you need to experience them in communication together. That’s how I feel about Zi! and Ade Kassim, especially after hearing Zi’s set at Sustain-Release last year and having seen nearly every aspect of Ade’s creative output in my years of knowing him. These two both inject their patient and personal affectations into their sets that result in clear and meaningful expressions to journey along with. After the b2b, Zi! will close out the Bad Room on their own.

Back in the big room we’ll be treated to NYC newcomer, by way of Minneapolis, echo. I saw him play at a Lifesavers party a couple months ago and was blown away by the ecstatic energy he created, smashing together disco, electro, midwest techno, etc to the effect of something that was simultaneously rough and joyous.

After that, I’ll close out the big room. Viola. Perfect night. Come dance! - Spurge taken in Good Room by @eto.ano

Here’s where I’m at for the month.

After traveling and DJing in Asia for two months, I came back feeling pretty fried about DJing in New York. It’s hella saturated, it feels like you have to be outside all the time and simultaneously active online and you’re still likely to get unanswered booking emails despite the facetime, engagement analytics, posturing, etc etc.

I ended the year feeling drained and was rejuvenated by traveling and remembering that NYC isn’t the whole world but it is my home, not a place I’m trying to always interface with expectations. Doing so all the time makes home feel tiring. Setting up the Asia tour was an affirming reminder that I can make shit shake elsewhere as needed and focus on enjoying playing music and seeing friends / people from my life in New York and the rest will sort itself out.

Without any outreach, here’s my month ahead. I’m happy to have many opportunities to practice my craft in succession, a privilege I really felt across the Asia tour and would like to continue to have the privilege to do.

See you out there.

Picture is from my time walking around Hong Kong.

We added more dates…and we’re not afraid to do it again!!!!!

Tour officially kicks off tonight with our show at Groundless Factory. Beijing has been a delight so far. We’ve encountered many lovely people, had some great laughs and already a nice dance at SOLO.

Can’t wait to freak it tonight. Playing outside of the US is always a pleasure and privilege. We’re excited to visit so many new places and meet cool folks along the way ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I hate when trailers give away the entire plot buuuut I feel really good about this set so I want to share some fun blends throughout.

Closing out 2025, I feel grateful for my consistent practice of preparing and performing for my Lot residency each month. In this show, and several others from this half of the year, I see a confidence that’s meeting my playfulness as a DJ.

Really, since my nowadays gig this summer I’ve been keen on leaning into my chaotic DJ energy on top of my penchant for narrative.

Some incredibly impactful sets I’ve experienced in the past few years (CCL @ Dripping, Djrum @ Sustain, Autechre) have modeled for me a method that’s been really resonating. The messiness of effected blend is a tool that proceeds harmony on the other side of it when I subtract elements and bring the mix back to a core essence.

Between my research agenda and my intention to lean into more creative mixing this year, matching my desire to DJ in more creative environments, I feel my voice evolving within this practice.

This months focus on James Ruskin is one I’ve been wanting to do for awhile. I’ve been a fan for quite some time his multiplicity across projects (Metier, Fear Ratio, O/V/R, Outline) his label Blueprint and consistency of phenomenal techno, IDM and ambient music was an easy pool to draw from but hard to narrow down to an hour!
