ANCHOR ME

'Anchor Me’ is a sibling piece to ‘Jamaica' on my first EP. The island I am referring to in the opening lines is Barbados which is where my father was born. There is often a lock and key scenario in my songs. I’m trying to unlock something inside of me and in this case the key is a connection through my history and lineage directly on my fathers side. It is about soul retrieval and this for me is understanding the many fires over many lifetimes that your soul has been forged within to truly understand all the parts that you are made of today.

We did it! China! Thank you Shenzhen Fringe Art Festival @szfringe for having us. 450 seats and they were all taken 🙌🏿. Thank you to the incredible organisers, for your efforts and constant enthusiasm to bring this show across the globe and make us feel so welcome. I wasn’t sure if I was going to share this but here we go…this is my mum (Jennifer Evadney Bancroft) who was diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2017 and passed away on January 20th this year.

I decided just before she got her diagnosis that I was going to use her name for my musical project - I liked that it was pretty and quietly personal - and it felt like it was important but I had no idea how profound it would become.

While releasing my first 3 eps @the_black_acre and the making of this album my mums health was a rollercoaster ride of rapidly changing experiences, emotions and caring needs. These were some of the most challenging experiences I’ve ever had. And it was magical and transformative, in ways that I can’t fully put to words, but it felt that as her energy was leaving her life it was being slowly transferred into mine. Sometimes in joy and sometimes in great discomfort, but it was transformative.

It’s only really just hit me how present she is in this album and how astounding it is that she has left this realm just before I release it. Like the knowing I had to use her name I knew somehow that she was going to go near to the album release date. But even so I’ve been stunned at the timing and its significance and beauty.

On the album you’ll hear us talking on a harp interlude and her name mentioned a lot in one song in particular, but most importantly the whole tone of reflection and learning on this album belongs so much to this crazy journey we’ve just completed together. And that reflection is that love is all there is. Really and truly. Nothing else is real or even exists. You can walk a million miles and you’ll find love where you started and wherever you end up. We come for the journey, we’re free to get lost, we often do, and love is the only true judge of if you’ve made it home. Nothing is perfect and absolutely everything is.

My mum loved to show off and well, in the end she has stolen the show so I’m very happy to present her beautiful self to you here and on the album.

What I write after this moment I think may be very different but Mum, this one is for you 🕊️

The making of the Plié video / #bts

I wanted to share some of the process on this one because it was quite a journey of exploration from concept to completion.

Plié is a song about being guided in my dreams by angels that teach me how to dance through the challenges of my life. For the video I only really knew that I wanted to move and that I wanted to reflect the songs central theme of the human experience of looking to the non physical world for direction, guidance and inspiration in our lives.

I was introduced to my wonderful choreographer Roseannna Bell @rosiepbell and the first thing she asked me to do was to film myself improvising movement. I had the vague idea of a choreography where I might be plotting out star constellations with my hands and Roseanna took things to a whole other level and choreographed out the points of all 12 astrological zodiac signs and their star constellations, and that is what you know see in the video. In the choruses my hands are plotting the points of each of the constellations in order around the zodiac and then there’s a movement to represent that sign. So for example after the Taurus constellation points we have me making the shape of the bull and after Cancer we have my hands making little crab claws etc. A crazy and ridiculously meticulous process from Roseanna. I especially loved dancing with her in the studio…look out for a big ensemble dance video I now want to make!

Love also to @_lucycaitlinr who came in on the day of filming to help with additional movement assistance.

This video is my attempt to honour the spirit worlds upon which our physical experience is formed and supported by. It’s my offering to those worlds to say that I see them as best I can. Even, and I feel especially, with all the noise of day to day life it’s so important to know we are never and have never been doing this alone. Perhaps some looking “up” might bring some love down. That has absolutely been my experience.

Celebrate with us the launch of the debut album from @Evadneyyyy ! Out on eyeless records march 6th. This will be special – we’ve hosted Evadney a few times before and it is always spellbind: a PROPER show, visually great and hugely creative.

Following the release of 3 EPs on Black Acre, being remixed by I.JORDAN (Ninja Tune), inclusion on Jamz Suopernova’s BBC Radio ‘Ones To Watch’ list, the Glastonbury Emerging talent list and creating an audiovisual live show that was performed in the UK and China, Evadney’s debut album ‘It’s Dreaming’ looks set to solidify him as a bold new voice on the UK music scene.

Born and raised in the UK, Evadney grew up in a large Caribbean family with a Jamaican mother and Barbadian father. Influenced by old school soca and calypso tunes through to artists such as Kate Bush, Bjork and Grace Jones, he later studied the likes of John Cale, Stockhausen and Musique concrète during his MA in Music Composition at Goldsmiths University.
