POSTS STORIES REELS

This piece was started many weeks ago. It sat not due to not feeling , as the muse was constantly tapping on my shoulder and not to do being lazy. I have been so sick that I dropped 12 pounds. 🤢😬

The parts were all there sitting on my desk. It looks somewhat different than the original plane. Maybe getting sick was a blessing in disguise. 🥸

12”x12” wood panel painted red, even the sides. After which, I Gold Leafed over the red, even the sides (a bit loosely so you can see the red).
Shot myself in B&W & printed it using a Ricoh laser printer (as I was planning on doing an image transfer(my jam). Took another photo and printed the second one on Vellum with a Sepia tint.
I decided when I came out of my 🤢 that the base photo needed to be torn up & reassembled. This signifies how I see or perceive myself at this juncture of my life. The vellum image is an outward image. A second skin if you will. What you want people to see. The vellum has a tendency to crinkle up from glues…this can be a beautiful intentional thing. The facade or surface can only endure keeping it together for so long.

The flowers are to symbolize the fleeting, delicate nature of life. I considered shooting red anemones to symbolize deep grief. However, I wanted to give it a glimmer of hope. The white symbolizes peace & sincerity. Pink is affection & friendship.

Oh my goodness! I am done with writing all the names of victims due to gun violence in a school setting throughout the country.
115 shootings in total
397 lives shortened within that count 2 victims were unborn babies.

There were a few times when I would have tears rolling down my cheeks as I was writing out their names. A few were very difficult, as my list included their ages.

I did not count nor include the perpetrators. I feel that there is no need to.

Now I have to fix the names as best as possible. Mount the flag to the canvas & seal with some type of varnish(?). I need to pick a few brains on what to use as a sealant…

I’m stopping tonight after I noticed a few small droplets of reddish spots. I was so focused on trying to cleanup the image transfers that I didn’t realize that the rubbing caused my finger to start bleeding.🫪
I am very pleased with the first four pieces. The purple one, not so much. Fingers crossed they will be dry enough by tomorrow that I can seal them.

Second go around attempting to cleanup the image transfers a bit more. I am still liking the effect on the second piece with the paper sticking to the image. It gives it a vintage vibe. Of course that may be almost impossible to replicate in the future.😂

Tomorrow is hopefully the last day of wetting the image with water & rubbing the surface paper off to expose more of the photo. There is still a chance of losing the image in the next rubbing.

Second go around of soaking the photos & rubbing off the paper film. As you rub there is always a chance that small bits or possibly pieces will rub off as well. This process makes each piece a unique one of a kind piece. You go into the process thinking you can control the outcome. After a certain point, you breathe and just let the process go to whatever direction it takes.

I will take another grouping of photos after the third rubbing.

Slowly trying to remove the paper from the image transfers. The purpose for going slow is to try not to warp the wood as much as possible. My hopes is that by doing this outside in the heat will help dry the wood a bit faster. Possibly, I am overthinking this… I will photograph them again tomorrow. My goal is to have them done by Wednesday.

Sneak peek on a few pieces I’m working on for the invitational show taking place at the Coastline Gallery in Newport. The theme is Let Me Eat Cake - No Regrets.

All I could think about was the Celebration Cake from Susie Cakes. Shoot it & Eat it with no regrets.🤣 of course the day I had scheduled the model & pickup the cake 🍰 it was so flipping hot 🥵! I like to shoot outside when I can & i didn’t want to move it indoors to a non air conditioned space. We did it!

My approach to the shoot was different. I was thinking of selective focusing on the cake slices. No f16/32. Then I would have them printed out using a color printer so I could transfer the images onto the wood panels.
More images to come…

Still working on the title…
Made it up to 2007. What’s significant about this date & why did I stop… on April 16th - 27 students & 5 Faculty members were killed with 17 wounded at Virginia Tech.
This is the first shooting of the year with two more to follow. Virginia Tech is the 56 school shooting since 1764.
I have 19 more years left to record.

1764 up to 1998 finished, which equals 38 separate school shootings.

I had to stop at 1999, April 20th, where 16 people were killed and 21 injured at Columbine High School. This is a slow project where I have to wear headsets and my music swimming around my head to keep focused.

I’m swinging back to the 14 States layout. I’m not sure 🤔 why I’m stuck on this. Everything will be covered with a flag.

The second thing I am stuck on is a school shooting that happened on July 26, 1864 during the Pontiac War. 4 Native Delaware (Lenape) Americans entered the schoolhouse in PA, and shot & killed the schoolmaster. It is technically the first shooting that happened in a school setting. However, it was during a time of war…should this matter? Does this still count? Do I include Enoch Brown’s name? by @evamariestudio

Title In Progress/Piece In Progress
At first I was planning on doing this piece as a Diptych. I was also going to try and use real guns that had been decommissioned (too expensive, but would have been cool). It started to appear that this piece was going to solely live in my head, like so much other works.
Ok, pivot was just the right choice to make this piece start to come together.

Instead of two(2) wooden panels, I decided to use an old canvas. Dimensions to follow.
Instead of real guns, I decided to find water guns. Not so easy when they are off season and you are trying hard not to buy from Amazon.🤪 I started to warm up to the idea of toy/water guns. You will understand the why as I post the progress.

Before I add the guns, I needed to gesso, paint, and gold glaze the canvas…because I wanted to.
The guns I felt needed to have a coat of gesso. A little crazy, 😜 because they will be covered with a flag. I am hoping to get the flag to mold around the guns…I am still working on this step.
I will post photos after I glue the guns, but before I add the flag. The flag will have a little extra detail added to it before I put the varnish or sealer on it.
