I knew I’d complete this race and that made it weird. The pressure was on to finish 1st (singlespeed) now that @tsmithreynolds1 had changed categories and it’s my turn to shoot for the triple crown in the @texasshowdownseries . This pressure never let up until the end.
A bad cold leading up to the start gave me doubts but I bounced back in time. We flew out of the gate, maintaining an unsustainable speed, powered by a tailwind. Favorable course conditions and wind pushed the pace for all racers, but I was relieved my gamble of a stiffer gear ratio seemed like it’d work out considering the conditions.
I really enjoyed reconnecting with friends from gravel racing, and ultra-racing buddies from last year’s series. Riding with Tyler at the start, and @acwhite1 in the middle of the race were real treats!
As night fell, I really began to wonder why I do these, and I never found an answer. I knew I could do it, it was just going to require extended-length effort and some discomfort. I spent the dark hours recalculating how many more hours of exhaustion I had left to finish based on my current speed. I probably should have listened to music but I never did. I choked down food every 15 minutes, cranked the pedals and kept cruising through what I call the ‘nighttime treadmill’ due to the limited sight distance at night while riding.
Suddenly, a sub-24 hour finish (and running from @joeyacuff, who was in second) became my top priority.

A 20-minute rest in a gas station revamped my energy and I wrapped it up to finish first in singlespeed, and 8th in the overall 275-mile race with a finish time of 23hours, 17minutes.

The best part came after the race when I caught up with friends, geeked out about bikes, and cheered others in from their big rides.

Thanks to my beautiful wife @lovelee.tx for the support and meeting me at 6am at the finish line with a hug!

As I line up for the next one, I’ll probably still be wondering WHY.

We have great Dynamo Light options available now thanks to innovators like Kerry, Martin, the team behind Supernova lights, the team behind the Exposure Revo (I think Kerry did some engineering for them), the Sinewave team, Kasai developers, SON developers, VeloLogical, etc…
They stand on the shoulders of early bottle dynamo designs and Panasonic ‘layered beam’ and LED light early adopter designs.

I built a brass SON dynamo mount to match my @monebikes triplane fork!
There are still improvements to be made, but it’s pretty solid.

Cruising on my new @monebikes #ElContinente with the Tri-Plane fork!

I’ve wanted one of these since I met Cjell on the Tour Divide in 2017 at Brush Mountain Lodge. He had his pre-production frames in his bread truck and I knew right then I had to have one.
It took me forever, and I don’t have it built up with its permanent parts yet, but she and I are racing this year’s @texasshowdownseries single speed together! by @evan_rides
