EAST TEXAS SLOWDOWN 🥇✨

There is magic in the piney woods. I get it now. ETS started lovely with a long roll out allowing me to ride next to @andrealroelofs and take in the sunrise on the lake. Then the race was on. Maybe it was the energy of the moment or maybe my makeshift training worked, but I let my legs do what they wanted and took off flying. The first 75 miles flew by.

At the high heat of the day I became strict about my heart rate to avoid overheating and made my way to Elkhart where I found some energy again. Then the sand, or should I say beach, complete with an elegant slow motion fall off the bike. It’s okay - vibes were high.

Onward to the next few towns and my biggest problem of the race: a dying light with what I would find out later was a bad cord, a dying headlamp and an “oh f**k” laugh and sigh standing in a sandy stretch about 5 miles from Lovelady around 1:30am. Once in Lovelady I decided a power nap was needed: shout out Lovelady Post Office. Charging my light kept me sidelined longer than I wanted and lessons were learned.

My favorite part of the ride came at dawn. The trees, lush again and lining the road towards the pink and purple sky, animals waking, birds singing. Peace. With 8 miles to go, I began to reflect and feeling raw, proud, full, content, & exhausted, a tear came down my cheek and a smile across my face.

The overall weekend was nothing short of special, connecting with new and old friends. The vibe that @texasshowdownseries @patrickordeath and his team bring just makes you let your guard down and fully enjoy every moment. A massive thank you to them.

East Texas Showdown, first series from some of my favorites from over the weekend. The lack of rain/mud this year made things much faster than anyone expected, making it extra interesting trying to do the calculus of where to intercept racers along route.
