a simple ten seconds about time, from an hour or so spent animating today (when focusing, i’m never sure how many minutes have passed) 🕥🕐🕜🕞

the ripping paper was not planned until it started happening naturally — a beautiful surprise, made possible only by working with physical material !

ultimately this brief moment will become integrated in a larger piece, commissioned by @mend_syracuse around a powerful personal essay on Time & Prison by Marvin Wade @truespiritualactivist . (I’ve been working on that film for a few months now and can’t wait for us to share once finished !)

illustrating Shokoofeh’s joy frame by frame as she spins down the hall, showing me an Iranian dance one day last July in the Shaffer Art building, radiating happiness as she does with her whole being!

8 seconds and 64 frames, celebrating my friend @shokoofeh_jabbari

portrait at the park in 12 seconds (96 frames of animation, drawn one at a time digitally) ✨

while visiting NYC i just happened to run into Syracuse film friends Sofi & Thomas, at the same time in the same park in a city of millions. they were enjoying people-watching and sketching strangers with genuine creative spirits that in turn inspired mine! @so0fika @t._.kelley

i love the life & energy of this quick unplanned video, and the way fellow artist Sofi (@draw.me.a.sheep.sofi) is not only a “subject” for my camera but also an active participant looking back at us with her camera. a messy river of scribbles brings out her joyful presence & perspective as the bright world swirls around.

i learn a lot every time i make a sketch like this through the process of experimenting and inching closer to an aesthetic that feels artistically exciting & emotionally expressive (zero AI involved in that process, just heart and mind), collaborating with real life and the people in it.

this is an illustration i drew for @mend_syracuse last March, commissioned to go along with the Project Mend podcast, Mend Fences.

the second episode is out today on all platforms and it’s a moving discussion about what freedom means, from the perspective of incarceration survivors. find it on apple podcasts, spotify, youtube, and wherever else you may listen!

you can see a timelapse of my illustration process in the third slide ✨ #procreate #illustration #projectmend #syracuse #artistsofinstagram taken in Syracuse, New York by @evanbode.art

blessed to share that Prison and Time is a Vimeo Staff Pick! 😭🙏 you can now watch our 7-minute short film for free online by visiting the staff picks home page.

one of the carceral system’s many harms is the invisibility of those harms, as it disappears human beings from the eyes of the outside world and commits abuses in silence.

Marvin’s personal telling of his own lived experience as an incarceration survivor represents a powerful reclaiming of visibility and personhood, in defiance of an unjust system that tries to erase both.

i’m honored that my animation is able to contribute to that visibility, in collaboration with Marvin and Project Mend.

thank you also to the curators at Vimeo, the producers of NYT Op-Docs, and every festival who has screened our work for sharing in that purpose too, by uplifting our very small, two-person collaboration and sharing Marvin’s message to be heard by many more people!

Today, Marvin Wade and I are blessed to share our short film “Prison and Time” through NYT Op-Docs—bringing Marvin’s deeply important voice, words, & story to an audience so big it is hard to wrap my head around. This morning, we’re already floored by the outpouring of beautiful messages in the article’s comment section. Thank you to everyone for the support, belief, & encouragement along the way that made this work possible ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 by @evanbode.art

a short experiment i made by drawing frame by frame on 12 seconds of Trisha Brown’s “Water Motor” (1978). my process was a very improvisational test to see if I could make the colors flow / harmonize / respond to the movements of the dancer. i really like how it turned out!

the song was never part of this piece, but i promote my sister’s music wherever i can here on instagram @miastegner and this track from the new album has a sense of frustrated energy that i think is a match

slide 1 is normal speed, slide 2 is 75% speed, slide 3 is 175% speed!

Ocean Phantom(s) — 6 variations of a 3-second looping animation, drawn frame by frame in procreate dreams, wherein a ghostly Sea Spirit dramatically asserts her presence in/as the waves, splashing continuously in and out of existence 🌊✨

she is joined either by her sisters of the tide or multiple apparitions of herself rising from the deep…. i’m not sure what they are up to here, but i suspect it has something to do with the Moon
