blessed to share that Prison and Time is a Vimeo Staff Pick! 😭🙏 you can now watch our 7-minute short film for free online by visiting the staff picks home page.

one of the carceral system’s many harms is the invisibility of those harms, as it disappears human beings from the eyes of the outside world and commits abuses in silence.

Marvin’s personal telling of his own lived experience as an incarceration survivor represents a powerful reclaiming of visibility and personhood, in defiance of an unjust system that tries to erase both.

i’m honored that my animation is able to contribute to that visibility, in collaboration with Marvin and Project Mend.

thank you also to the curators at Vimeo, the producers of NYT Op-Docs, and every festival who has screened our work for sharing in that purpose too, by uplifting our very small, two-person collaboration and sharing Marvin’s message to be heard by many more people!

Today, Marvin Wade and I are blessed to share our short film “Prison and Time” through NYT Op-Docs—bringing Marvin’s deeply important voice, words, & story to an audience so big it is hard to wrap my head around. This morning, we’re already floored by the outpouring of beautiful messages in the article’s comment section. Thank you to everyone for the support, belief, & encouragement along the way that made this work possible ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 by @evanbode

a simple ten seconds about time, from an hour or so spent animating today (when focusing, i’m never sure how many minutes have passed) 🕥🕐🕜🕞

the ripping paper was not planned until it started happening naturally — a beautiful surprise, made possible only by working with physical material !

ultimately this brief moment will become integrated in a larger piece, commissioned by @mend_syracuse around a powerful personal essay on Time & Prison by Marvin Wade @truespiritualactivist . (I’ve been working on that film for a few months now and can’t wait for us to share once finished !)

Take a look behind the scenes at the process of animation behind “Prison and Time,” an award-winning Project Mend Production written / narrated by Marvin Wade @truespiritualactivist and animated by Evan Bode.

In the film, Marvin shares his message to young people while reflecting on his 25 years of incarceration and the positive change he achieved not because of prison, but in spite of its insidious harms working against him at every turn. Marvin advocates the befriending of time as a path toward hope and healing.

In its first few months on the festival circuit, Prison and Time is proud to be an official selection of:
•Justice Film Festival @justicefilmfestival (NYC)
•Wide Open Experimental Film Festival @woefilmfest (OKC)
•ATL Doc (Atlanta)
•New Jersey International Film Festival (NJ)
•FOLCS International Short Film Competition (NYC)
•MicroActs Artist Film Screening @microacts (U.K.)
• and an Audience Award Winner at Pebbles Underground Film & Video Art festival @pebblesunderground

You can watch “Prison and Time” online by visiting project-mend.net, or on Evan’s website at evanbode.net/project-mend.

Summer of magic with @teens_with_a_movie_camera 🎬👁️✨💜 this July it was once again a joy & privilege to co-create an open space of imagination, together with youth in Syracuse. not teaching but collaborating—experimenting in an artistic laboratory full of freedom, and learning from & alongside each other in a process of playfulness taken in Syracuse University by @evanbode

For three weeks this summer, Teens with a Movie Camera worked with “Curious Creatures” in a creative community collaboration. Looking to Maya Deren’s filmmaking philosophy as a guide, we embraced the “freedom of amateurs” to make art without fear—experimenting with sound & image in a unique artistic laboratory of collective creativity.

In the warm, enchanted sanctuary of “Visions of Hope” at @artragegallery , we invite you to reimagine reality as young filmmakers do: oranges become rocket fuel, eggs become astronauts, and an ordinary backyard tent becomes a levitating spaceship, alive with moving images. The world is yours to shape, mold, and change!
