portrait at the park in 12 seconds (96 frames of animation, drawn one at a time digitally) ✨

while visiting NYC i just happened to run into Syracuse film friends Sofi & Thomas, at the same time in the same park in a city of millions. they were enjoying people-watching and sketching strangers with genuine creative spirits that in turn inspired mine! @so0fika @t._.kelley

i love the life & energy of this quick unplanned video, and the way fellow artist Sofi (@draw.me.a.sheep.sofi) is not only a “subject” for my camera but also an active participant looking back at us with her camera. a messy river of scribbles brings out her joyful presence & perspective as the bright world swirls around.

i learn a lot every time i make a sketch like this through the process of experimenting and inching closer to an aesthetic that feels artistically exciting & emotionally expressive (zero AI involved in that process, just heart and mind), collaborating with real life and the people in it.

Discussion follows on how we can overcome incarceration's impact in our communities.

Event Details:

Date: Saturday, October 3
Time: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Location: Path Thrift, Highland Springs

Featured Films
+"Pathway to Freedom" When 18-year-old Willie Nobles was handed a staggering 96-year sentence, his mother, Ginny Parham, refused to let him become a statistic. This moving 25-minute documentary short captures her relentless 25-year fight to free her son and combat mass incarceration in her community. Culminating in Willie's awe-inspiring release, it is an unforgettable testament to a mother’s love, community solidarity, and the sheer grit required to confront a broken legal machine.

+"Prison and Time" Where does a person find the strength to grow when the walls around them are designed to break them down? Through visually striking animation, filmmaker Evan Bode brings the words of writer and activist Marvin Wade to life. Reflecting on 25 years of incarceration, Wade challenges the false narrative of institutional rehabilitation, showing how personal evolution and healing happen in spite of an inhumane system.

+"Beyond Trauma: Stories of Hope" This intimate documentary follows formerly incarcerated men as they courageously confront the unhealed childhood wounds that shaped their lives. Using raw storytelling and expressive art, these men trace their pain back to its roots. The film offers a beautifully realized roadmap for moving forward, revealing that understanding the origins of trauma is the ultimate key to shattering cycles of incarceration and finding true accountability.
Join us to witness this incredible journey from pain to purpose, and celebrate the resilience of the human spirit over systemic failure.

Where does a person find the strength to grow when the walls around them are designed to break them down?

In the visually striking short film Prison and Time, filmmaker Evan Bode brings to life the powerful words of writer and activist Marvin Wade. Reflecting on 25 years of incarceration, Wade shares a deeply personal and urgent revelation: his profound personal evolution occurred in spite of, not because of, a deeply inhumane prison system.

Produced in collaboration with Project Mend—an organization dedicated to uplifting the creative voices of those impacted by the criminal legal system—this animated documentary challenges the false narrative that the carceral system fosters rehabilitation. Instead, it offers a poignant, beautifully crafted look at how the human mind and spirit must fiercely defend their own capacity to heal, create, and evolve in the darkest of places.

Don't miss this stunning animated reflection on time, resilience, and the triumph of the human spirit over systemic failure. Join us for the Inthrive Film Festival's opening weekend in Richmond, Virginia, from October 1–4 to experience Prison and Time and celebrate the unstoppable creative power of system-impacted individuals.

new artwork featuring the two main characters from my short film “Out of Frame” @oof.film — Poet and Astronomer 💛

i made this today using a still image i took on set of Jules & Zaria in their glorious costumes + makeup, standing in front of the green screen when we were shooting the ending scene ✨ looking back on my film over a year & a half later, i still feel grateful & lucky for the screen presence of these two performers + how striking they look together in costume (!!)

for this image i tried to recreate the same setting that’s in the film around them, a wheat field at sunrise, and animated wind blowing through their clothes, hair, and wheat, which was a lot more fun and feasible than I expected! (for the actual movie, i never needed to animate wind in their hair, because windmaster Sam Bray was always just off camera, holding a giant fan)

i like that animating wind can be loose & improvisational & imperfect, because the breeze’s movement is unpredictable & always shifting. it still took patience to draw repeatedly on much of the image using different shades / hues from the picture, to create the illusion of wobbly, rippling material. but i only had to do all of that 5 times, because I could loop those 5 frames repeatedly for the rest of the 4 seconds.

this exercise is even making me consider going back into the film edit, and touching up a few moments with more animation, using the new tools i know now… now that i’ve had so much time away from the project, and i’m less burnt out from the massive undertaking of it… it’s tempting to bring it just a bit of new life, with fresh eyes & new techniques (even though i really swore i was finished)

when first imagining / arriving at the setting of a field, back in August 2022, the below was a poem that came to my mind. because of this, the score’s track name is also an allusion to it:

Out beyond ideas
of wrong-doing and right-doing,
there is a field - I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.

when thinking about how to represent an experience of dissociation from reality in this moment in #ASpotForFrog, i took inspiration from a couple shots from Persona (1966) & The Truman Show (1998).

aside from being visually inspiring, both films ask self-reflexive questions about the role of images in mediating our experience of identity & reality—themes relevant to Frog, as a character who uses art to navigate their place within an institution’s artificial constructs ✨🖼🎨🎭🟢

For three weeks this summer, Teens with a Movie Camera worked with “Curious Creatures” in a creative community collaboration. Looking to Maya Deren’s filmmaking philosophy as a guide, we embraced the “freedom of amateurs” to make art without fear—experimenting with sound & image in a unique artistic laboratory of collective creativity.
