Last weekend was a dream. A huge thank you to everyone who came and packed out @globehalldenver on a Sunday and @sinisterstar303 for shooting @ediththeband’s set on our 3rd and final night of the release weekend. I am dumbfounded to be ending this year on a higher note than I thought was still possible for me. 🖤🕸️🕷️

“Drag”

I finished an outline for a new EDITH song this week called “Drag” and decided to throw together a new mini-board to record the demo. Let me just say that a boosted klon-style pedal like the Sick As is such a great tone for this type of music! Here’s the chain:

@fender American Professional 2 JM (@blackmasselectronics Between Worlds pickup set)
@1981inventions LVL
@bondieffects Sick As
@walrusaudioeffects Julia
@deathbyaudioeffects Echo Dream 2
@neuraldsp Archetype Nolly X

Maybe I’m still just stuck on a lot of the gazier 2010’s stuff lately but I have developed a thing for oscillating delay within the mix. The ED2 really lets you push it to the edge and pull back with complete control. Such a classic!

“To Deafen, To Tranquilize”

One of my favorite aspects of playing music is digging into the dynamics of your playing. All the dynamic control from you as a guitar player is going to come from your picking hand and how gently you pick or how hard you dig in.

Once you’re comfortable with this in your playing you can make gear choices that accentuate the dynamics. Gear that is reactive to your playing (volume dynamics, note choices, sustain, etc) is ideal in this case. I am using the neck pickup of a @fender strat (single coils and PAF style humbuckers tend to work well with volume dynamics), the @1981inventions DRV and a @fender DRRI tube amp.

Setting the pedal and amp at a low gain / edge of break up sound is crucial. You’ll notice light picking is crystal clear and when I dig in there is a very good amount of overdrive/breakup. The other thing I’m using to bring this out is the real spring reverb tank in the tube amp. The spring tank is very reactive as well, only making a small tail on quieter notes and a longer reverb tail on louder strums.

When you start to dissect your playing and rig in this way it really shows what a delicate ecosystem you can create musically. Keep playing music nerds. 🖤
