Day 5 of Rae Lake loops backpack from last year

Nothing left to do but finish the hike out...while stopping to fish, swim, and gape repeatedly at the views. Hiking down Kings Canyon was spectacular with endless waterfalls and swimming holes, perfect for what was turning out to be a hot day.

Finished early afternoon. Including side hikes, I did 70 miles and 14k of vert. Awesome loop with great views and frequent swimming holes!

Not sure I'd be as stoked hiking it during peak season. Rae Lake permit hikers plus PCT hikers would make for very busy trails. The September timeline was great, aside from right at Rae Lakes and close to Roads end trailhead it wasn't too busy.

Day 4 of Rae Lakes loop backpacking trip from last year....

Fun start to the day. Cowboy camping...it was around 7am and I was laying there waiting for the sun to rise over the ridge to warm things up a bit. Laying on my side, I rolled onto my back and as I did saw a flash of black fur right next to me leap into the air and do a 180 before running off. A bear was walking over the rocks in pic 3 within arms reach. Despite being fully awake I never heard it at all. Makes me wonder about those times in a tent when you think you hear something walking past in the night...

Bear wandered off, didn't seem to care. Didn't try to chase it like rangers sign suggested. But did try to angle it off and up the hill away from others camped nearby along the lake shore.

Got up and got going. One of my side trip options was Baxter Lake which is accessed from Dollar Lake where I camped. But I opted to do a side hike up PCT to Sawmill pass instead. Have been section hiking PCT for years. Hiked Taboose to Sawmill a few years ago with @phourosix and this would avoid leaving a gap and plus, heard this section had lots of great swimming and fishing holes, which it did. Made it up and back, then continued on the loop late afternoon. Got a bit skunked on camp sites as I didn't see any for ages. Finally found one after dark along Woods creek. Great day out there!

Day 3 of last year's Rae Lakes backpack.

Side hike no. 2 for the trip was into the Sixty Lakes Basin which is on the west side of a ridge above Rae Lakes. Hiking over the crowds immediately thinned. Only saw a couple people all day. The trail weaves in between dozens of small shallow lakes. Very pretty but without any big views (or big fish in the lakes). Made it out to a viewpoint across from Dollar Lake that had an awesome view both down and up the valley to the north that I'd be following. Retraced steps to camp, packed up and headed out. Possible plan was to hike up and camp at Dragon Lake but never saw the turnoff so I kept going. Lots of fishing opportunities right on trail. Ended up at Dollar Lake for camp just at sunset.

Day 2 of Rae Lakes backpacking from last year...

East Lake was a great spot to wake up. Did a bit of fishing then dropped back down to Bubbs. Lots of great waterfalls on both trails. Climbing ramped as I got onto PCT and continued up to Glen Pass with a storm passing just to the south. Great first view down to Rae Lakes, and I caught a pika taking it in as well. Got down to lake level and immediately looked for a place further away. Spots close to the trail were jammed with people. Found a spot away from the masses but with a great view of the lake. A bit less mileage but longer day with the higher elevations.

Backpacking trip from last year I never got around to posting!

Snagged a permit after Labor Day for Rae Lakes loop and fit it in among some @orogenesiscollective scouting. My permit was for a CCW loop starting up Bubbs Creek from Roads End trailhead in Kings Canyon NP. Planned to take an extra day or two so I could check out some side hikes and do some fishing.

Day 1 was a nice hike up a deep canyon with towering granite walls. Steep to begin with up rocky switchbacks, then easing up once in the canyon proper. Trail was not super busy despite permits being sold out. Seems a lot of people bail on their permits after Labor Day. Climbed up to camp at East Lake as the first side mission, a pretty lake at 9,600fr that was nice and quiet. Small rainbows and brown trout. Cowboy camped.

With a fortunate break in the heatwave @schillingsworth and @karawoolgar came out from PHX last weekend for an overnighter in the Laguna mountains. John brought a flask of special whiskey to try and some riders at one of the trailheads handed up some beers. Really fun riding out there as always. Still got a bit toasty out there mid day. Thanks for making the trip out!

A few co conspirators recently schemed up a return of underground endurance racing to Socal. The first event was this past Saturday at Mt Laguna where 14 riders lined up for the Laguna big dumb ride with 57 miles and 6100ft around Laguna and Cuyamaca. 9 riders finished the route with the fastest finishing in 7 hours vs 11 hours for me. In true endurance race fashion no one was around when I finally showed up back at the start hahaha. Good times out there and ideal weather for June with a nice breeze much of the day. We will have more of these rides around Socal starting this fall. At some point we'll have a website but for now message me with your email address if interested in future rides.

SDMBAs annual Archipelago ride was this weekend. Good times as always and near perfect weather for 46mi and 5k or so vert. Swept the last segment instead of the first. Uneventful section, which is ideal!

Spent a couple bonus days in the Gabes working on an ongoing access project for @orogenesiscollective . A couple of us were able to punch through the last of the thick brush and deadfall to get through to the actual trail that needs work. But the access route still has new deadfall and growth where we had worked previously. Was able to get a good chunk of that brushed again. Soon we'll be able to start clearing the trail!

Headed up for another campout with @lowelifesrcc in the San Gabe's last weekend to work on Condor Peak trail and camp at Lightning Point. Condor is a trail they put thousands of hours into resurrecting following the Station Fire and years under closure. It's a rad trail and a highlight of @orogenesiscollective in Socal.

Not much positive on social media lately so here is some trail work stoke from last months @lowelifesrcc campout on Idlehour.

We based out of Idlehour trail camp and worked trail on each side of camp including a tough cliff section. If the before shots don't make sense it's because there wasn't much left of the trail!
