Went over to SoCal for an overnight ride near Mt. Laguna. Evan put together a really cool route, with only one questionable route choice!! 🤣 It was Kara's first time riding the area and only my second time in the area after riding through during the Stagecoach 400 a few years ago.

Lots of great singletrack out there, some of it feels so far out there and random, but the tire tracks say otherwise.

Definitely was a tough go on the singlespeed, but overall I didn't do too bad... until the final miles when I was getting by on fumes.

Last Saturday this group of generous humans (and a few not pictured) helped make the trails in Cuyamaca a little bit better by out sloping and installing drains. Pure Project provided adult beverages for these thirsty volunteers. I encourage you to support Pure Project because they make great beer and support our work! @sdmba @purebrewing

Pics from this past weekends campout and two days of work on Idlehour. With the Mt Wilson Toll Rd in rough shape again, it was a tough journey into camp. We spent the weekend cleaning up tread, building drainage, clearing down trees and debris, and reestablishing trail corridor that was lost in erosion and flooding. It was a beautiful and productive weekend in the canyon. We are on track to having this trail ready when the closure is lifted. Lots more to do!

Orogenesis days 76-79, southernmost SoCal: After 3,000 miles of pedaling, another 200 miles really just feels like a few more turns down the track. I was eager to wrap up this phase of the ride, but I wasn't in a big hurry. But Huw and I were pushing a bit to get him to Idyllwild in time for the incredibly generous Mikki to give him a lift to LAX, and a day of 4x4 roads up into the mountains felt downright relaxing after all the demanding singletrack.

After a couple fun weeks together, I was sad to see Huw head home. Heading south from Idyllwild the following day, I felt antsy, ready for a break, hoping the final U.S. miles wouldn't be too mentally taxing, eager to see Claire...being present was tougher than usual.

Engaging riding usually helps me with that, and although there wasn't much trail, I got to descend 6,000 feet into the Anza Borrego desert, splash through flowing washes, bask in 100-degree heat down low, climb 6,000' back up high, shiver in the cold, and then ride the incredibly fun Cuyamaca/Noble Canyon trails with @evdog_sd.

Orogenesis days 59-75, escaping the orbit of LA: After the San Gabriels, Huw (@topofests) and I took a day off in Wrightwood staying with new friends Mikey and Haley. It was a much-needed mellow day in the pines. But a weather forecast calling for heavy rain and snow snuck up on us! We decided to push on and aim for another town day in the very peculiar Lake Arrowhead to wait out the 3-4" of cold rain, and we rolled in after dark just as the rain moved in.

A day later, we were back out on absolutely hero dirt and loving it - trails through the San Bernardinos brought us to Big Bear, and then we climbed up and over to the other side of the mountains to descend the Santa Ana River Trail.

@evdog_sd met us for that and a frosty night of camping. Sections of the trail just reopened post-fire, and it was a rowdy good time and took nearly the entire day for the loooong drop toward Redlands. Superb trail, sketchy wash-outs, huge views, my bike taking a solo trip way down a ravine, Huw's wheel steadily dying, fixes for all the problems thanks to incredibly helpful folks, this day had it all.

We crashed for the night in a preserve in town, not exactly sure how all that had happened in one day...and so grateful it had!

The new @freehubmag just dropped with a great dive into the ethos behind @orogenesiscollective penned by another abandoned trail aficionado, @dillon.osleger.

Great timing too, the photos that @calebwallace shot are all from Oregon's Rhozone... and we're hosting the first annual Rhofest this weekend! We resurrected this trail system and added it to the Orogenesis route earlier this spring and it's quite the gem.

About 2 hours from Portland or Salem, we'll be running shuttles on Saturday starting at 10am from the Cozy Quarry (squatchpit), 7.5 miles up 4670. All trail info is on @trailforks. Forecast looks cold and soggy so bring dry socks and warm beverages.

I always gauge how my legs are feeling on this wall ride. I don’t always get a clean, so, I end up walking up it. @evdog_sd says I dumbed the “Sweet roll” down by creating this alt line. Guilty as charged, your honor. Slap the handcuffs on me.
