I gasped out loud the first time I saw one of Rose Blouin’s photos. In the summer of 1987, Blouin, a local photographer, set out to Washington Park almost every day to photograph the beautiful and the mundane. Picnics, festivals, baseball games, couples cuddling in the grass. The photos are astounding. My poet brain loves them as portraits of the human experience. My Chicagoan brain loves them as historical artifacts of one of my favorite places in the city. But when my sociologist brain sees them, I can’t help but think… dang, when was the last time you saw that many people in Washington Park?

According to 2026 data from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, Chicago is home to about 740,000 Black residents. In 2000, that number was over a million. Among other American cities that historically had substantial Black populations, guess what were the only other two to see similar declines over that same period? New Orleans is one. Detroit is the other. Which provokes a startling question: what disaster has befallen Black people in Chicago that’s comparable in scope to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Katrina or the collapse of the Detroit automotive industry?

Why have so many Black folks left? How do people navigate the tricky decision of whether to stay or go? For those of us who remain, how do we make meaning of the city changing around us?

SOME NEWS: my dear friend eve and i have been quietly working on a new book for the past couple of years. it’s called “THE BEST POEM AND OTHER POEMS, TOO.”

it’s a big-hearted, silly, thoughtful, inventive, joyful collection of illustrated poems (ostensibly for young people, but aren’t we all young people).

we made it in the tradition of the poetry collections we grew up on.

words by eve, drawings by me. everything illustrated lovingly by hand, no ai ever.

it comes out march 2, 2027. you can preorder it now (and please do!). we can’t wait for it to be out in the world.

The American Sociological Association annual meeting is happening in August in NYC and I will not be there. In recognition of the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the ASA ignoring its own bylaws to block a membership vote on the topic, @soc4pal is calling on folks to #BoycottASA. Original Sins was going to be featured on an invited book panel; I will figure out a way to do that free and publicly even if it’s just me reading aloud on a park bench. I also will figure out a way to do open student office hours. Please visit sociologistsforpalestine.org to learn more 💓 by @eve.ewing

I don’t have a new book of poetry this year. I am, however, trying hard to be a good Friendly Neighborhood Poet. I’m trying to be a good steward at @buildcoffeeandbooks . I’m trying to be a good mentor and community member and friend. I’m trying to be courageous in the face of villainy. I learned that partially from some of my favorite poets. So, thanks to the @chicago_reader and everyone who voted me best poet this year. I will try to continue to be a good poet, by which I mean, I am a poet, and I will try to be good. 💓 by @eve.ewing

Come knit with @micah_cm and @eve.ewing on Sunday Feb 15! Total beginners and longtime knitters welcome. We’ll be knitting the “melt the ICE” hat from @yarn_cult and we’ll have hot drinks and good company.
