Words, Power, and Community: Dr. Eve L. Ewing | Thursday, November 12 at 7 PM CST

Engage in an important and thoughtful conversation with Dr. Eve L. Ewing, acclaimed author, educator, poet, and cultural organizer whose work explores race, education, identity, and community. Through writing that blends scholarship, storytelling, and activism, Dr. Ewing has become one of today’s most influential public voices on culture and education.
Explore the power of language and storytelling as Dr. Ewing reflects on how words shape public memory, challenge systems of inequality, and help communities imagine new futures. From classrooms and libraries to poetry and popular culture, this conversation will consider the many ways stories influence how we see ourselves and one another.
Perfect for librarians, educators, students, writers, and readers alike, this event invites attendees to think critically about the role of literature, learning, and community in times of change. Whether you are familiar with Dr. Ewing’s work or discovering it for the first time, this conversation promises insight, inspiration, and meaningful discussion.

Brandis Friedman will moderate the event. Friedman is a writer and anchor for WTTW’s "Chicago Tonight" and "Chicago Tonight: Black Voices," and also serves as a champion for libraries.

Before we can talk seriously about where education needs to go, we need to know where it started.

How did American education become what it is?

What was it actually designed to do?

What beliefs about Black and Native children were baked into its foundation?

And where do those beliefs still show up in our classrooms, policies, curriculum, discipline practices, expectations, and relationships with students today?

Because some of the shit we call “normal” in education is only normal because it has been repeated for generations. Even though it’s not effective. Even though it’s harmful.

And if we don’t know where it came from, we can reproduce it while believing we’re doing something completely different.

We’re going to connect what happened hundreds of years ago to what happened in somebody’s third-period class yesterday.

And most importantly, we’re going to ask: What does knowing this require us to do differently?

Welcome to the Teacher Podcast With No Name.

Only 49% of CPS students eat school lunch. In Cincinnati, that number is at 80%.

Getting lunch participation up by even 10% more in Chicago, could mean more back for our schools from the federal government.

Thank you, Eve Ewing, for this conversation. Punch #124 on November 3.

I’m proud to share that I have a new essay on witness poetry, why it’s important and how to write it in difficult times, now up at The Writer’s Chronicle. It represents 20 years of study and says F*ck 🧊! Free 🍉! Scroll to the end to see the bibliography. Lots of good books there! Link in bio. #selfproclaimedpoet #poetryofwitness #socialjusticepoetry

Last month I gathered some of my favorite artists, storytellers, organizers and collaborators to meditate on Community as AI: Ancestral Intelligence. Over two days I was blown away by how profoundly these bright lights channel the wisdom of our ancestors, both known and unknown, and how they engage community in their work. Over the coming months I’ll be sharing clips from many of our conversations on @theinvite.project, leading up to a series of livestreams on the Cookout feed on @blacksky.app & a extended livestream on Ancestral Intelligence premiering Juneteenth 2027!

Thank you @ajamonet @nonamehiding @eve.ewing @asgharthegrouch @dallasgoldtooth @tonikaj @kamilah_rashied @drnicolerawls for sharing your brilliance!

I owe a great debt to my co-hosts @journeyswithjenna & @kiahgmusic, and producer @sarahminnie_ & @rs.peters (I’ll be sharing full crew with the videos), for stepping in to ensure this event was a success.

Finally thank you @m.lamourt & @kinnmarie for the gorgeous photos!
