Rooted in Pious’s life, work, solidarity and memory and shaped by the recent and tragic passing of our beloved comrade and former RJN trustee, Professor Jason Arday, this campaign seeks to turn remembrance into collective action.

As we remember both Pious and Jason, we want to create space to reflect together on *Black grief, racialised dehumanisation, and the political conditions in which our communities live and experience loss.*

At the launch, we’ll share the campaign’s aims, introduce our living campaign blueprint, and invite those present to help shape where the work goes next.

Expect food, time to connect, movement building, a roundtable discussion, storytelling, and collective discussion of the campaign blueprint.

Tomorrow 12pm Sheffield Town Hall and SADACCA ~ Sacred Golden Pod Breaking Ceremony🍫

The Ceremony marks World Chocolate Day, in memory of Dr Pious Nyandoro, reflecting on memory, migration, resilience and colonialism, through cocoa. The event is the next step in the campaign for justice for Pious. We will expose why we know Belgium and Swiss chocolate, but not the names of Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon or The Ivory Coast, who produce the cocoa.
The event is free, will begin at 12 as a march with African Royals, drummers and dancers, through the city to the Town Hall, to greet the mayor. There is then a reflective ceremony in the Town Hall which there is limited free tickets for.

At its centre will be one simple but powerful act:
the ceremonial breaking of a golden cocoa pod.
But this is not simply a ceremony about chocolate.
It is about people.
It is about the people whose hands cultivate cocoa but whose names and stories are too often absent from the chocolate we consume.
It is about the histories of colonialism, extraction and migration carried between Africa and Britain.
And, in Sheffield this year, it is about remembering a man whose life insisted that people pushed to the margins must never be rendered nameless.

We ask....
What if a cocoa pod could speak?
Whose hands would it remember?
Whose journeys would it carry?
And whose names have disappeared by the time cocoa becomes the chocolate we consume?

11 days ago, Eve and Jake completed #5MarathonsIn5Days for Mental Health, Solidarity and Justice. This video gives a glimpse of the incredible community that came together to make the challenge possible.

🫂 30 people (and 2 dogs) joined them.
🥾 Together, they walked 584.26 miles in solidarity (equivalent to over 22 marathons).
🤝 24 organisations from across the country supported the challenge, alongside countless individuals, pubs, cafés and businesses who welcomed walkers as Sanctuary Stops.
🙏🏼 Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared, encouraged, cooked, hosted, and joined the walkers on the route.

From the send-off at The Sanctuary, through the beautiful Peak District and local Sanctuary Stops, to the final miles into Sheffield and the community meal. Every part of this challenge was shaped by people coming together.

We all walked in #solidarity for Dr Pious Nyandoro, for everyone whose lives are harmed by a dehumanising asylum system, and for a future where people seeking sanctuary can live with dignity, safety and hope.

But we still need your help. We have over £2,000 left to raise to reach our £12,000 target. After everything this #fundraiser has achieved, let's reach (and smash) it. 🎯

🎉We officially completed #5marathons5days for Mental Health, Solidarity and Justice, July 28th-August 1st 2026! People and community power held us through this incredible experience, traversing over 4 Ben Nevis' in height 🥾💫 Every step was resistance against the system that killed our late friend and comrade Dr Pious Nyandoro, who's anniversary nears. Rest in Power, 15/3/77~10/8/2025

🫂Thank you to every single person, organisation, venue and business who has donated and made this challenge possible. With your generosity, encouragement, logistical support and care, we were able to cross the finish line for our finale community meal at @sheffieldcityofsanctuary

🐕30 people and 2 dogs joined us to walk over a staggering 584.26 miles in solidarity with freedom seekers and the impact of the migration system on mental health, supported by 24 organisations. We shared Pious' story and those like him, raising awareness of the intentional cruelty of policies that harm migrants and confronted misinformation and propaganda against our migrant communities

🔗We are so close to our fundraising target, with an incredible nearly £9000 donated so far. Every share or donation no matter how small will help us smash our target, to help recover the community funds used for Pious' repatriation and funeral costs, commission a mural in his memory and support VVIDY, an organisation he co-founded. This challenge tested out physical and mental limits, but we walked for Pious, system change and hope👣follow to continue this journey for justice with us

Day 1 ~ 5 Marathons in 5 Days for Mental Health, Solidarity and Justice 🥾 Yesterday, 27.36 miles in the bag

What an incredible start to our fundraising challenge 👣every step has been for Pious, and every other individual who has lost their life because of the impact of migration policies

We cannot thank everyone for the support, donations, shares, love....our community is made this challenge a possibility. We are deeply grateful

This is a VERY hard challenge!

🚶‍♀️⛰️5 marathons in 5 days for Mental Health, Solidarity and Justice✊️🫂

Last August, we lost Dr. Pious Nyandoro. He was a lifelong organiser, academic, co-founder of VVIDY, Co-Chair of ASSIST, and a beloved father. Pious spent 20 years fighting the UK’s Hostile Environment, a system designed to exhaust the spirit and destroy the mental health of those seeking safety. We refuse to let his story end as a statistic.

From 28 July to 1 August, Eve (VVIDY and ASSIST) and Jake (ASSIST) are turning grief into power. We are hiking 130 miles (209km) around the Peak District (5 marathons in 5 days) tracing a giant orange heart across the landscape to reclaim a symbol of welcome.

Today marks the start of A Million Acts of Hope and falls within Mental Health Awareness Week. Border violence is a mental health crisis, in the last year alone, Sheffield has lost at least three freedom seekers to crises caused by the dangerous conditions of the Hostile Environment. In a climate of rising hostility, we walk because we refuse to accept a system that calls violence ‘policy’.

A Million Acts of Hope celebrates the everyday acts of kindness and connection happening across the UK. We’re joining in the best way we know how, by lacing up our hope filled boots and walking in solidarity.

This challenge builds on the incredible support shown immediately after Pious’ passing. We aim to fully replenish the community funds used for his repatriation, secure the long-term future of VVIDY, and create a community mural to honour his memory.

🌠Remembering Dr Pious Nyandoro 💭

With under 2 weeks to go until #5Marathons5Days , and 32% of our target raised, we are sharing the story of our late brother Dr Pious Nyandoro as the 1st anniversay of his death nears🫂

Pious should still be with us. With such an immense loss, we turn our grief into hope. His legacy, memory and power grow as we begin this campaign for justice.

We defy the systems that took his life. We know he is still with us as we organise, and is no longer suffering.

With just 1 week to go, they're preparing to tackle five back-to-back marathons, tracing a giant heart around the Peak District. That's 130 miles (209km) and over 5,500m of climbing (almost the equivalent of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!) ⛰️

They're training hard to honour Dr Pious Nyandoro's legacy and raise vital funds to replenish his repatriation costs, secure the future of VVIDY, and support people seeking sanctuary in our community. 🧡

4 Weeks to Go! 🥾

From 28 July–1 August, Eve and Jake will set off to hike 5 marathons in 5 days! Covering 130 miles across the Peak District, with over 5,000 metres of ascent, in honour of lifelong community organiser, activist and academic Dr Pious Nyandoro, while raising vital funds for our community
