the @nytimes didn’t ask for my opinion, but a friend did, so here it is!

i understand the fine therapist need Lori Gottlieb was trying to thread, but unfortunately, her advice missed the mark.

White parents need to hear the message loud and clear: if your kids - of any age - are racist, it IS your responsibility to take them to task. if you are curious about *how* to do this, check out chapter 7 of my book - WAS THAT RACIST? How to Detect, Interrupt, and Unlearn Bias in Everyday Life. by @evelynrcarter

does booking keynote speakers fall under your list of responsibilities? GREAT NEWS: i’m about to make your job a lot easier. my favorite thing in the world to do is talk, and i want to bring one of these conversations to your stage.

let me know which of these four is your fave, and if you like my energy but don’t quite see a topic match, let me know that too and we can work together to build a custom session.

p.s. even if booking speakers isn’t your responsibility, it probably is for someone you know. so, please, for them and for me: SHARE THIS POST.

Today’s featured Uplifter is Dr. Evelyn Carter, a social psychologist with more than 15 years of experience helping organizations, from higher education to financial services to professional sports, learn to detect, discuss and interrupt bias.

People have suggested to her that DEI work is dead. She answers that it will not be as long as she is still alive and holding the torch.

Her new book,Ā Was That Racist?: How to Detect, Interrupt, and Unlearn Bias in Everyday LifeĀ is that torch, and it is one of the clearest and most practical books I’ve read on the subject of racism in America. It also happens to have one of the best book origin stories I’ve ever heard.

In this episode, we go deep on both.

Listen wherever you get your podcasts or comment EVELYN and I’ll DM the episode to your inbox. by @evelynrcarter

ā€œlisten to Black women,ā€ we say. and last night, portland did.

i knew joining @ijeomaoluo as her conversation partner for the Endless Wonders Book Fest would be incredible. what i didn’t anticipate is just how much ground we would cover in an hour’s time.

our discussion spanned the topics of parenting, the relationship between HR and DEI, what accountability looks like for those who have done tremendous harm, and the audience of our books. (spoiler alert: ijeoma doesn’t write *for* White people — and neither do i.)

most importantly, ijeoma reminded us that we are here BECAUSE we’ve survived. we have the tools to fight injustice — and to win — and it’s up to us to make sure *those* stories get told, too.

i’m so inspired, and so full of hope. by @evelynrcarter

Saturday, October 10th at HQ! 5-7p

How do we combat racism in a world determined to tell us it doesn’t exist? To hold the line against racism, we need to know it when we see it. Whether you’ve ever wondered ā€œWas that racist?ā€, ā€œDid I say the wrong thing?ā€, or ā€œHow do we talk about this better?ā€ā€”this conversation is for you. Join Dr. Evelyn R. Carter for a conversation about her book Was That Racist?Ā and how we can all detect, interrupt, and unlearn bias. Dr. Carter will be joined in conversation by Dr. Andy Luttrell, a behavioral scientist who studies opinion formation.

Author, Evelyn R. Carter, Ph.D., is a social psychologist and author of cutting-edge research on how to detect and discuss racial bias. As a diversity, equity, and inclusion expert with 15+ years of experience, she has applied those evidence-based practices in a vast array of industries ranging from higher education, to financial services, to technology, to retail and professional sports, and at organizations like American Express, Burberry, Cushman & Wakefield, Nike, the NFL, Uber, and UCLA. Known for blending research, pop culture, and corporate DEI practices into unique insights, Dr. Carter’s work has been featured in The Atlantic, USA Today, Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, and more. Her first book Was That Racist? How to Detect, Interrupt, and Unlearn Bias in Everyday Life was released in January 2026. Evelyn grew up in the suburbs of Columbus, OH, and now resides in sunny Southern California.

Dr. Andy Luttrell is a behavioral scientist who studies where people's opinions come from and what makes them change. He also hosts the popular podcast Opinion Science, featuring the latest insights about effective communication and public opinion. He is an Associate Professor of Psychological Science at Ball State University and a recipient of the 2024 Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications. When he's not talking about social science (and even when he is), he refurbishes vintage typewriters, makes art in his letterpress print studio, and hangs out with his family in Hilliard, OH. taken in Two Dollar Radio Headquarters by @evelynrcarter
