I’m the first to admit that I’m guilty it not being outdoors with the kids enough! But it really has a transformative effect on mood, simply by changing it up and getting some fresh air

Kids don’t care if you have money.
They don’t need fancy toys.
They need you.
And a little imagination.
These moments don’t last forever.

Between working on her speech and realising Miss G is due to start kindy next year, I am trying to slow down and actually play with her.

There’s definitely a time an space for beautiful educational resources but the power of child led, open ended play should never be underestimated

Today is #dldday to raise awareness for DLD (developmental language disorder). This year’s theme is unity. Together for DLD

It’s not something I had ever heard of until I had my daughter but something that feels very familiar reflecting on my own childhood and beyond.

The craziest part?
It affects 1 in 14 people
That’s 2 kids in the average classroom
That makes it more common than autism

DLD is a difference in how the brain processes language
It’s a neuro developmental condition like ASD and ADHD meaning it’s lifelong

DLD is not recognised by NDIS
Meaning access to speech therapy support for kids (especially older kids) is limited

We are very fortunate that Miss G attends a Language Development Centre but not all kids are get access to these service because of the lack of awareness. Please take a minute to share or read up on DLD. Together we can create awareness as a stepping stone to more meaningful recognition, supports and services.

Thank you to @frankpaolinomountlawley for raising this in parliament yesterday and your ongoing support for DLD awareness

Language is what connects us. Supporting language creates better opportunities, relationships and communities

A quick little reflection whilst watching my kiddos at the park after school.

This one is way more personal than I get with most people. Largely because it hurts less when people drift or walk out of my life (which is completely normal!)

30 years
Since I celebrated my mums birthday with her
I was 5
Now I’m mother to a little 5 year old girl

A lot has changed in 30 years
The whole world has changed
In other ways it hasn’t changed enough
But it all hits differently now that I’m Mum to a 5 year old

Empathy
To that young woman trying to navigate motherhood, grief, physical pain, addiction and neurodiversity in a time that it didn’t exist for girls

Heartbreak
For the little girl who’s whole world is about to be turned upside down

30 years from now

I hope for a world where respect is more important than how someone’s brain works, how they look, where they’re from or the world you’re born into.

Where difference is less important than respect

Where wealth is less important than human life or dignity

Where differing views is met with interest and empathy rather than hatred

Where people carry less hurt

Where killing isn’t normalised

Where FDV and CSA aren’t commonplace

Where kindness and connection aren’t weakness

A life with more humanity

In the meantime, growing kind kids into humane adults
And praying I can minimise how much I f*ck my gorgeous kids up

Our ocean themed play continues thanks to the range of resources from @iqmstore

Miss G started learning about the beach and ocean this week too so seemed only fitting to continue the ocean play.

This deep water exploration takes the @heydoodle_ reusable colouring mat (also glow in the dark which is really cool! We will be trying it out at night too) and a tray with coloured water.

Tip: I coloured ours black but you could use any colour and add a spoon of cornflour to make the water cloudy and opaque

Next a clear cup or jar pushed against the bottom of the tray to reveal what lays beneath
(* STEM discussion or play opportunity about water displacement)

Our coastal creatures themed sensory play was wholly inspired by these specimen beauties. As soon as I saw them at @iqmstore I knew I had to do a play centred around them!

@our.earthlife have perfectly captured curiosity within resin and @iqmstore have them available as part of their lovely curated site. What I love most is there isn’t too much choice! Just quality resources, easy categories and a wonderful founder fostering InQuisitive Minds (IQM Store) Use EVENT10 for a special little saving

Our Rockpool is created using a play silk, reused packaging paper and taste-safe “kinetic sand”

Taste Safe Kinetic Sand Recipe

Materials:
Vegetable Oil (or similar)
Plain Flour

Method:
To make truely taste safe, heat treat flour to sanitise and allow to cool (recommended if you have mouthing children)
Mix 4 parts flour to 1 part oil
Massage until combined evenly
Mixture should be crumbly but hold its shape if compressed

Play doesn’t need to be complicated! But a few resources that genuinely invite curiosity and extend play are worth their weighting gold.
