Aaaaah I got video of Fitz being the bravest baby in the mock hunt!! πŸ₯Ή To go from 2 stops and a hesitant lurch over this fence in our individual test to locking on and taking me to it the next day was just the best feeling. Of course following other horses can help, but he's one where that hasn't made much difference if he's unsure about a fence, so this one was all him! I was so so proud (are you sensing a theme here).

I did not expect to get to see this, but I put the call out and TB people delivered πŸ‘πŸ» A huge thank you to Sara A & Katie P for sending me these clips! by @eventingenzo

RRP 2026 recap: Dressage aka πŸ•Ί pink πŸ’– pony πŸ’…πŸ» club πŸͺ©

After hauling 1000+ miles and doing Field Hunters, I knew Fitz would likely be too tired to do the flatwork he's capable of. I was absolutely right and he was like "lady, if this does not involve gleefully cantering across KY bluegrass, I can either be straight, on the bit, or have impulsion. Pick one." But I had one goal and one goal only for dressage, and that was complete a discipline at RRP. Mission accomplished πŸ₯³

I did world's shortest warmup, did not try and put this horse together, and had no plan whatsoever for my demo ride beyond remember to halt somewhere πŸ˜‚ He still had some lovely moments, and handled the environment great! This is the 2nd time he has ever been in a dressage arena, as I chose to focus on jump exposure for schooling day and never went up here.

We finished 37th out of 59, and 11th amateur (by 2.62 points, so maybe I should've pushed a little harder to get 10th and a pretty ribbon... oops) - not too shabby for a green tired baby doing his second ever dressage test in his life!

But what was probably my favorite moment of the entire Makeover happened after our tests. We went up to collect Corbin from his video vantage point and head back to our barn, and got stopped by a mom, daughter, and grandmother who were local but not horse people and interested in learning more. They told me that they had been watching dressage for awhile and Fitz was their favorite of the day, and then asked me about the @retiredracehorseproject, why Thoroughbreds as my breed of choice, and about their life and training on the track.

I chatted with them for 10 minutes, and Fitz stood like a statue the entire time and was super sweet and friendly letting them say hello to him. What an ambassador for the breed and OTTBs as sport horses πŸ₯ΉπŸ©· taken in Kentucky Horse Park by @eventingenzo

RRP 2026 recap: Field Hunters day 2 πŸΆπŸ“―

First, thank you RRP for allowing us to participate in the mock hunt and Iroquois Hunt Club for lending your staff and hounds!

Fitz's jump confidence was still shaken from the individual test the day before, so I was SO proud of him when the mock hunt went over IT's fence 1 and this boy was bold and brave and absolutely sailed over it no problem!!!! Sadly I have zero photo or video evidence, though you can at least see him start to canter up to it in one video that came across my feed. If anyone knows someone who might have video of the second mock hunt group going over the log near the watch tower, it would mean so much to me to have it πŸ™πŸ»

He had also wanted to walk into the water in our IT, so to be cautious I pulled him back to a trot and he was like "uh heck no I'm a big bad hunt horse lemme canter in!" Even if we're still building initial boldness, I absolutely love that he clearly digests and processes to apply to the next time he sees something.

Beyond that, I continue to be impressed by his brain and demeanor. We let a rider go in front of us at her request, since I knew Fitz doesn't mind being last in the field, and he stayed steady even when it wasn't her horse's day and she elected to bow out. Since it wasn't like we were competing for a score, we hung back, waited, and checked to make sure she was ok before catching up to the field. Fitz remained calm and unbothered being left behind by the herd, then handily caught up to end the mock hunt and walked back to our start point on a loose rein.

Plus, he stood Likeagentleman for the stirrup cup and a bonus post-hunt, pre-dressage port, which of course is a very important skill πŸ˜‚πŸ·

I just love this boy! I was so thrilled with him and excited to enjoy the rest of fall hunt season with Norfolk at home. by @eventingenzo

RRP 2026 recap: Field Hunters day 1 🦊

Fitz was phenomenal for our Field Hunters under saddle class, earning a 10 on general demeanor from 2 judges and an 8 from the third!

While our individual test didn't go as hoped, I still had a blast and am SO proud of this horse for trying really, really hard. Which I just love about him, and am so grateful for this dude's brain and willingness to give things a shot!

I had decided to enter RRP specifically for Field Hunters after doing the friendly, starter-equivalent course last year, because I knew BN eventing would be too big an ask for him... surpriseee, this year's course got bumped up to BN questions πŸ˜… I knew from walking it the day before that the jumps were going to be above his current level of understanding, but the whole course wound up causing more trouble than expected for even the older and further developed horses (Fitzy was actually the youngest, and 1 of only 4 horses to have last raced in 2026). So much so that the tests ended up running 45+ min behind, and despite warming up great waiting in the heat took the wind out of Fitz's sails.

The first fence proved to be influential, with just 3 of the 19 of us going clear over it. Several pairs got eliminated there, so even though we had 2 stops I was thrilled that Fitz went over it to continue on. They were also very genuine, 'uh mom this is huge and spooky are you sure I can do this one?' hesitant stops at the base, not dirty slamming on the brakes or run outs, so a million gold stars for Fitzy for jumping it on the third try!

Unfortunately between the heat and that first fence, it did knock his confidence and he stopped at the next jump, our trot fence (a BN log with brush into a hedge clearing). We were allowed to keep going, so we popped over on a re-approach. After a keyhole-y log out of the hedge was a fake-but-much-realer-looking-than-the-singular-faux-ditch-he's-schooled ditch and HE DID IT!!! From a walk-leap, but he did it! 🌟

Then he was a star at navigating terrain and the water crossing, and nailed the gallop to halt and gate open/close Like a G6- I mean Gentleman 🎩 taken in Kentucky Horse Park by @eventingenzo

Fitz absolutely crushed it at schooling day of RRP - I am so proud of him!!! He's never jumped or even seen anything with filler, had only gone over a much smaller oxer once before, never been in an environment like this... but he was so brave and gave everything his best shot ⭐️

Onto Field Hunters 🀞🏻

Welp, best-laid plans and all that. After last weekend's hunt got rained out, I was like ok, not ideal, but at least we'll have opening day meet for one more hunt and XC exposure before RRP. Cue our truck battery dying πŸ₯²

While I'm bummed to have missed the start of formal season, I'm just glad this happened at home and not during our haul to KY. The truck is now armed with brand new batteries and ready for the 16 hour trek – me and Fitz, not as much as I had hoped to be at this point, but we're gonna give it our best shot and have fun!

And at least I got this nice photo out of the one hunt we got to do (PC RuthWorks Photography) πŸ’• by @eventingenzo

Heavy on the outside it starts to pour 🌧️

Very grateful to have an indoor during this nor'easter to keep chipping away at green bean flatwork! Fitz is really starting to put the pieces together, even when I ride like a limp noodle because I'm still getting over being sick this past week. Not the best timing when we're down to the wire for RRP prep (especially since what was going to be Fitz's second of 3 planned pre-KY hunts sadly couldn't happen with the storm), but making the most of every ride til we leave! by @eventingenzo

So proud of Fitzy for completing the @norfolkhuntclub New England Hunter Trials!! It was a huge ask for him, but he stepped up and was the bravest baby πŸ₯°

The day threw a ton of new things at him, including a busier warmup and his first oxer (which was also the first vertical he's gone over under saddle, to boot... surprise Fitz!), and he was excellent. For the bigger and new jump types we encountered out on the course, once he took a second to go "ohhh ok this IS a jump, I'm supposed to go over it right?" he tried his little heart out and jumped everything! I had been planning to skip any fence he was too unsure about, so I was really pleased with him. Such a good boy!!

Thank you NHC for putting on a fun, friendly show; this was great prep before we head to KY. 2 weeks to go 🫣 I also finally got around to setting up Fitz's Make the Makeover fundraiser to support RRP & attempt to earn my entry back - link is in my bio! Fitz says he'll give you your choice of a boop or googly eye shoutout if you donate πŸ‘οΈπŸ‘…βš«οΈ by @eventingenzo

Took Fitz back to Norfolk for his 5th time ever jumping, and just could not be happier with him! (This was over LDW oops, I've gotten real behind on updates again but listen, the weeks before RRP are a straight up time warp + my job has been insanely busy)

Buying a then-3yo colt sight unseen off a photo, race replay clips, and bloodlines was definitely a gamble, but I think the eventer I wanted is in there πŸ™Œ For how few times Fitz has jumped, I've been impressed with how quickly he's caught on and become more bold – look at him graduating from log-like fences to stone walls πŸ’…πŸ» He really seems to enjoy moving out XC, and I keep saying it, but I'm so excited to see what this boy can do!

It's going to be a lil daunting heading to RRP with comparatively minimal prep, but it does take a lot of pressure off that it'll be a stepping stone in our (hopefully long) journey together rather than an end goal.

Next up, New England hunter trials! by @eventingenzo

Just a quick appreciation post for @omegafields, because I took this video 2 weeks after Enzo's week-long hospital stay 🀩✨

I credit their Omega Horseshine for him being in such good condition when he was admitted for colitis and endotoxemia and then looking this shiny and healthy after being so sick, because he only gets 2 lbs of Triple Crown Senior Gold and 1.5 lbs teff pellets a day for his "grain."

ps. you can use the code ENZO to save 10% on any of their products (including our fave heart-shaped Nibblers flax treats) - and fwiw, I buy Horseshine myself and would keep buying it even if I didn't have a discount to share, because I've had such success with it in crafting Enzo's reformed-hard-keeper forage-based diet by @eventingenzo

Fitz update part III: we're headed to RRP 2026!

I was on the fence about entering, because I knew eventing there would be too big an ask for him (it's BN/N). And as much as I want a redemption round, I wasn't sure if it'd be worth the trek from MA to KY just for dressage when he's still going to be super green and lightly restarted by October. But I submitted a late entry the very last day on the chance that my prediction of him having hunt horse potential would be right... and after being able to take him hound schooling and over some hunt-style fences, sent in my final entry this week for Field Hunters & Dressage! πŸ₯³

Field Hunters will have similar size/type jumps to these clips, or at least did last year, so I felt it would be much more feasible than eventing & I'm thrilled to give it another shot! I was so impressed by Fitz this past weekend – the weather shifted and it started raining right as we arrived, but he didn't bat an eye. And for his 4th time ever jumping, I really couldn't be happier with him. He may not be bold-now-think-later like Enzo, but he's willing to try which I so appreciate. Have I mentioned I'm excited about this horse? :) by @eventingenzo
