Almost two hundred years later, it's still one of the boldest lines in English literature.
I illustrated this bird breaking upward out of the dark, wings wide, headed toward the words themselves.

Sophie Scholl was 21 when she was executed for handing out leaflets.

She and her brother Hans were students in Munich and members of the White Rose, a small group that dared to tell their neighbors the truth about the Nazi regime. She was arrested in February 1943 and put to death four days later. She never took back a word.

Sophie has been a hero of mine for a long time. Here she is with her eyes closed and her head bowed, a halo behind her and roses all around for the movement that bears their name. She belongs to that category of "Folk Saint" for me - her courage to the point of death, a holy thing.

Now more than ever, we need heroes like Sophie to look up to. We need to put on their courage, and stand against tyrannical governments wherever they rise.

Alcott doesn't promise the weather holds. That's what makes the line stick — it isn't optimism, it's competence. The storm is coming and the hands on the tiller are steadier than they were last year.

Jack London's Credo — set, inked, and pulled one at a time on our 19th-century galley press.

The figure is small on purpose. Ash and dust, meteor and planet, the whole thing hangs on a person alone on a trail with a long climb still ahead of them. That's the argument the poem makes: burn while you've got the fuel.
