Meds didn't fix the anxiety or depression?
I find why: hormones, gut, nutrients, labs.
Not treatment-resistant. Under-investigated.

Confession: for years we have been told the “chemical imbalance” explanation for depression as the primary cause of this condition.

Here’s what no one tells you: your mood is also shaped by gut health, blood sugar regulation, neuroinflammation, hormones, and genetics — not a single neurotransmitter deficit.

If you’ve tried medication after medication and still don’t feel like yourself, you may be under-investigated.

Save this for the next time someone tells you it’s “just chemical.” 🧵✨

Panic attacks aren’t a logic problem. They’re a nervous system problem. When your amygdala hijacks the wheel, the part of your brain that processes “calm down” doesn’t have access anymore.

That’s why telling someone to “just breathe” is not the best advice during a panic attack.

We want to activate the senses instead. Cold water on your face. 5 things you can see. Something strong-smelling. A textured object in your hand. These are direct signals your nervous system can actually use.

If you have other favorite grounding techniques, drop them below!

Every script on these slides is something you can say out loud, word for word, in the exam room. Save them. Use them.

You are allowed to ask for these labs.

You are allowed to know your actual numbers, not just whether you passed.

The most common thing I hear from patients is that they asked their previous provider about some of these tests and were told it wasn’t necessary or their levels looked fine.

Fine is not optimal. And you deserve optimal.

Before you reach for a sleep med, there are 3 things I always want to rule out first👆

Sleep meds have their place. But if the cause is never found, they can mask the problem instead of fixing it. You may just be under-investigated.

Part 2: the labs I order for sleep that most people never get. Follow so you don’t miss it.

Which one sounds like you: trouble falling asleep, or waking up at 3am?

As a board-certified psych NP, I’m not anti-ADHD medication. I’m anti-skipping the workup. 🧠

Focus, memory and follow-through can all look like ADHD when something else is going on underneath.

Sometimes it’s ADHD. Sometimes it’s ADHD plus one of these. Either way, you deserve to know.

Comment “YES” to get a work up.

You may not be treatment-resistant. You may just be under-investigated.

📌 Save this for your next appointment, and send it to the friend who’s thinking about starting meds.

🧠❤️ What does your heart have to do with depression? More than you might think.

For World Mental Health Day, I challenged Everest Goldstein, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, at IMMH 2026 with a question.

Can you name a blood marker connected to both cardiovascular health and mental health?

Her answer? High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP).

Here’s where things get interesting.

The American Heart Association recognizes elevated hs-CRP as a cardiovascular risk-enhancing marker.

But a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, involving more than 85,000 participants, also found higher levels of C-reactive protein among people with depression.

The surprising part? Inflammation may contribute to depression in some individuals.

But here’s what we need to understand.

Not all depression is inflammatory, and an elevated hs-CRP does NOT diagnose depression or prove inflammation is causing someone’s symptoms.

We also discussed omega-3 fatty acids and curcumin, which have been investigated for their potential anti-inflammatory effects.

As a Functional Medicine physician, I believe mental health deserves the same attention to underlying physiology that we give cardiovascular health.

The brain is part of the body. Treat it that way.

💬 Would you have guessed hs-CRP? Or would you have picked another marker?

What if one of the most familiar explanations for depression is incomplete?

For years, many patients were told depression was caused by a chemical imbalance, specifically low serotonin.

But here’s the fascinating part.

Just because antidepressants work doesn’t prove depression was caused by low serotonin.

Depression is far more complex.

I’m here at IMMH 2026 with Everest Goldstein, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, discussing why we need to look beyond simple explanations.

Sleep, hormones, medical conditions, genetics, trauma, and life experiences can all matter.

And yes, antidepressants can be incredibly valuable.

On World Mental Health Day, let’s remember that understanding the individual is just as important as understanding the diagnosis.

Were you ever taught that depression was simply a chemical imbalance?

Your panic might not be “just anxiety.” 🫀

💬 Comment LABS and I’ll send you my word-for-word guide to asking your doctor for these tests

You may not be treatment-resistant. You may just be under-investigated.

📌 Save this for your next appointment and send it to someone who’s been told it’s “just anxiety”

Part 2 is next: why panic hits at 3am. Follow so you don’t miss it.

Which of these had you never heard linked to panic? 👇

Waking up at 3am wide awake, heart racing, mind spinning? That pattern usually has a cause, and two of the most common are blood sugar and hormones.

🩸 Blood sugar: if your blood sugar dips overnight, your body can release cortisol and adrenaline to bring it back up. Those stress hormones wake you up, often with a jolt of anxiety.

🌙 Hormones: falling progesterone and estrogen (before your period and in perimenopause) can make sleep lighter and more broken.

If you’ve been told it’s “just stress” or “just anxiety,” it may be worth looking deeper. Not treatment-resistant. Under-investigated.

Send this to the friend who texts you at 3am 😅

You may not be treatment-resistant. You may just be under-investigated. 🔍

If you’ve tried two, three, or even four antidepressants and still don’t feel like yourself, you might have been told you have “treatment-resistant depression.”

But so many of the patients I see have never had a thorough workup. Thyroid, iron, vitamin D, B12, blood sugar, inflammation, and hormones can all play a role in depression, and they’re often missed.

Medication can absolutely be part of the plan. But if the root cause is never addressed, it makes sense that you’re still struggling. 💛

Ready to get to the root? Comment “YES” to get started! 👇

Diagnosed with ADHD as an adult? You’re not alone 🧠

So many women grow up with ADHD that goes unnoticed. Instead of being hyperactive, we’re often the daydreamers, the anxious overachievers, or the ones quietly working twice as hard to keep up.

Many of us become experts at masking. Then life gets fuller with careers, kids, and responsibilities, and hormonal shifts like perimenopause can make symptoms harder to manage. Suddenly, the strategies that used to work just… don’t.

If this is you, a later diagnosis isn’t a failure. For many adults, it brings relief and a whole new level of self-understanding 💛

How old were you when you were diagnosed? Tell me below 👇
