Join artist Jono Everett for a fascinating hands-on Piano Deconstruction Workshop and uncover the hidden mechanics, materials and stories inside a piano.⁠

This isn't about destruction. It's about curiosity, discovery and transformation.⁠

Participants will help dismantle a piano, learn how it works, and contribute to a collaborative sound artwork created from the instrument's final notes.⁠

Meet the artists: Jono Everett

The Novocastrian: Year One celebrates the artists who have helped shape our first year of sharing Newcastle’s visual arts.

Jono runs The Soap Factory with his partner @sophia_emmett and a bunch of other brilliant creatives, and is making an exciting shift in his creative practice, building on years of mastery in woodworking. We’re delighted to include him as he takes that depth of skill and understanding of materials in new directions.

Over the coming days, we’ll introduce the artists taking part. Together, their work celebrates the character, culture and creative life of Newcastle and the Hunter.

Join us at Wester Gallery to celebrate Jono and the artists who make this such a vibrant place to live and create.

Opening: Friday 6 November 2026, 6 to 8pm

The Top 100 entries will be announced in November and along with award winners feature in the December issue of Australian Wood Review. See bio links to subscribe if you want to receive that issue.

Maker of the Year, presented by Hare & Forbes is Wood Review’s annual showcase for fine woodworking and wood art. The competition is open to woodworkers all over the world – amateur, pro and student. In 2026, the $20,000+ prize pool includes $11,500 in cash awards.
