THE NOVOCASTRIAN: YEAR ONE Meet the artists: Jono Everett The Novocastrian: Year One celebrates the artists who have helped shape our first year of sharing Newcastle’s visual arts. Jono runs The Soap Factory with his partner @sophia_emmett and a bunch of other brilliant creatives, and is making an exciting shift in his creative practice, building on years of mastery in woodworking. We’re delighted to include him as he takes that depth of skill and understanding of materials in new directions. Over the coming days, we’ll introduce the artists taking part. Together, their work celebrates the character, culture and creative life of Newcastle and the Hunter. Join us at Wester Gallery to celebrate Jono and the artists who make this such a vibrant place to live and create. Finally met this beautiful beast in THE QUIET ROOM at @singletonartsandculturalcentre. It is difficult to describe the feelings that overcome me when standing before one of @everett_creative’s works … perhaps the right words are humanity and ‘heimweh’ (a yearning for home). At one point I found myself transported right back up those creaky, narrow stairs into my Swiss grandmother’s attic - a space that was larger than life, beautiful and magical; but also a little scary, depending which way the shadows fell. How lucky we are that a designer, craftsman and furniture maker can channel all his skills into art and community. Make sure you wander down the hall to see the short film showing how Jono and @built_in_kind brought together many hands and memories to form ‘Morphology’. This wonderful exhibition is on until November 15th!

SPOTLIGHT ON ARTIST JONO EVERETT 💜🧡 Jono Everett is an artist and fine furniture maker who co-manages the Soap Factory Arts Studio in Mayfield East. With his first major solo exhibition, The Quiet Room at Singleton Arts + Cultural Centre, generating plenty of excitement, I spoke to Jono about his life and creative work. SCROLL FOR NEXT CAPTION ➡️ 1. Tell me a little about yourself and your style of art? I’m an artist and fine furniture maker, working in wood. I take on a myriad of creative projects, for museums and galleries as well as top end residential private commissions. I co-manage the Soap Factory Arts Studio in Mayfield East, housing 11 incredible artists. My work is focused on minimalist clarity, meticulous craftsmanship and contemporary design. My current sculptural work is an adventure using only salvaged roadside chairs as material language - exploring the idea of home - expressions of love, loss, passion and longing. I was trained by master-craftsman and woodworker George Ingaham in the early 90’s at The Australian National University and his meticulous focus and respect for tools and materials has guided me through 40 years as an artist and maker. 3. Tell me about your current exhibition The Quiet Room? The Quiet Room is an immersive art exhibition that includes a series of sculptures which look at the big emotions - love and passion and loneliness. Only using salvaged roadside furniture - each one imbued with its own story and memory which is intertwined within the work. The works present concepts which everyone will connect to and be able to find their own stories. Hidden inscriptions and secret messages - torches are available at the front to find your way. The Quiet Room is a sacred space for contemplation and careful observation, inviting you to reawaken memories of people and places, while creating space for self-reflection. 3.
