Dog air quality safety during wildfire smoke: Dr. Fayzan explains why Air Quality over 150 means no walk today.

Canadian wildfire smoke is over the tri-state right now and your dog is getting a worse dose than you are. They’re low to the ground where particulates settle. They breathe faster relative to their size. Same air, but dirtier for them.

The rule:
101 to 150 AQI, cut the walk in half
Over 150, skip it. Quick potty break, back inside
Pads are fine on a day like this

Highest risk: flat-faced dogs (frenchies, pugs, bulldogs), seniors, puppies, any dog with a heart or breathing condition. They hit trouble earlier, so drop those numbers.

Watch for coughing, gagging, watery eyes, heavy breathing, or a dog that suddenly stops eating.

When you get back in, wipe paws and coat with a damp cloth. The smoke rides home in their fur. Run a purifier where they sleep.

One bad day clears. Repeat days are what cause problems.

Lead in 99 of 100 cat foods? Here’s what the new study actually shows.

The Clean Label Project tested 100 cat foods for heavy metals and other contaminants. Before the headline, read its methods:

“Detected” includes traces too small to measure.
Foods were ranked against each other, not against a safety limit.

No numbers were published for any one food, so you can’t check them against feed limits.

Each food was tested from one batch, and most brands had one food tested.

The group behind it certifies brands, and three of them made its clean lists.

What holds up, measured per calorie: fish-based foods carried about 18x the mercury and 2.5x the cadmium of other proteins.

Dry food had about 3x the lead of wet. Where the plastic chemical DEHP was found, cans and pouches had about 5x more than bags.

What to do: if your cat eats mostly fish, mix in poultry. Otherwise, nothing in this report is a reason to switch.
