The Contrapuntal is delighted to invite you to the opening of our latest project, EverydayNile: Water, Energy, and Food Justice Along and Beyond the Nile River.

The exhibition presents photographic stories in those countries developed by photographers working with communities and researchers on issues ranging from water access and environmental change to food systems, livelihoods and the everyday realities of people living with the Nile.

The evening will also feature a panel discussion between researchers, photographers and project partners, reflecting on the process of bringing scientific research and visual storytelling together.

We will conclude with a reception offering a space for researchers, photographers, students, journalists and the audiences to meet, exchange ideas and continue the conversation.

Funded through The Journalism Science Alliance, a joint partnership led by The European Journalism Centre and Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and implemented with IHE Delft Institute for Water Education this project brings together photographers, researchers and project partners from across three Nile Basin countries – Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt – to examine how environmental and social changes are experienced by communities living along the river.

Date: Thursday 10 Sep 2026, 18:00 - 21:00
Location: Atrium, International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague
Free entrance!

On the 22nd of February 2025, the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) organized the Nile Days celebration, a significant event that brought together the ten countries that share the Nile River. The theme of this year’s celebration was ‘Strengthening Nile Cooperation. #tbt @danielbuuma

As climate change impacts water availability, cooperation is essential for developing shared strategies to adapt to and mitigate its effects, ensuring long-term water security for all basin countries.

Coordinated action among Nile basin countries ensures that the river continues to meet the needs of all, now and in the future.

We are so happy to have exhibited at the Nile Parade this weekend, organized by different partners to celebrate the rich cultures in the Nile Basin Countries! It was a wonderful opportunity to share our stories, celebrate water, discuss key issues surrounding water and the environment, and recognize the beauty of the Nile River. More importantly, we enjoyed each other’s company, good food, and great photos by the Nile.

The #EverydayNile project brought together photographers and storytellers from across the Nile Basin to highlight the river’s significance and how it shapes daily life. Through powerful images and stories, they captured the challenges, hopes, and resilience of people living along the Nile Basin. From water scarcity, plastic pollutution, environment, everyday lives of the people to cultural traditions, #EverydayNile amplifies voices and perspectives across this vital waterway, fostering understanding and unity.

On the occasion of World Tourism Day, celebrated every year on September 27, we remind you that the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, despite the repeated wars, remains one of the regions of the globe with immense tourism potential.

From rare wildlife and plant species to volcanic mountains and beaches around the jewel lakes of the African continent, the Kivu region boasts a hospitable and resilient population capable of leaving unforgettable memories in the minds of visitors, no matter where they come from.

On Idjwi Island, for example, where we took these pictures, men and women from the countryside, with no athletic training, regularly have fun paddling on their small wooden canoes. Races are also organized on certain occasions by notable figures of the large island of the DRC—a lively atmosphere that has stayed in my memory and one I would love to relive.

Last year, East Africa faced the devastating impacts of El Niño, and in Western Kenya, Lake Victoria swelled beyond its banks by several kilometers, displacing many communities who depended on the lake and its surroundings for their livelihoods. The loss was overwhelming, but thanks to generous donations and community-driven programs, vital relief efforts reached many of those affected, helping rebuild lives and restore hope. 🌍

Captured these shots while out there with One Acre Fund, who were also doing incredible work to support the displaced communities.

The idea that happiness is selfish is a mistake. True joy takes energy, generosity, and strength. The happy soul becomes a cushion for others, often uncredited, yet their light is the ultimate act of selflessness. #home

Since 2012, I’ve been immersed in the world of dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata) in Sudan—enchanted by their dazzling colors, oversized eyes, and graceful flight. From my garden by the Nile to remote deserts and lush forests, I documented their behaviors, habitats, and crucial role in reflecting ecosystem health. We recorded 89 species before conflict changed everything, forcing me to leave my homeland. Yet my love for these winged wonders remains strong. I dream of returning home to witness dragonflies dancing above clear waters once more. Explore the full story at the link on our bio.

My photo story “Life at the City of the Dead- The People”
Developed during my storytelling workshop by @theviiacademy and @ali.arkady
——————————
My name is Heba el Begawi. I am an Egyptian photographer born and raised in the
bustling city of Cairo, Egypt. Since childhood, I have been visiting my family’s tomb in the
ancient Mamluk desert cemetery located in the heart of Cairo. Known as el Qarfah el
Sharqyah (the eastern cemetery) it was built during the Mamluk era – between the 13th and
15th centuries. Throughout history, the area has served as home to diverse inhabitants as
well as some of the most iconic examples of Mamluk architecture.
During the late 80’s, the cemetery workers, such as gravediggers and tomb
guardians, along with their families, began living within the cemetery. They did so with the
acceptance and blessings from the tomb owners, and eventually transformed the area into a vibrant community.
This photo story shows the everyday lives of these people, who have lived in the
cemetery for generations. The cemetery is their home. Over time, neighbors become
families and their children are now cousins and friends.
During the last couple of years, the cemetery was partly demolished - like many
historical areas in Cairo - in the name of urban development, to create paths for new roads
and bridges. This is what urged me to start telling the story of this special community and
the unique architecture found in this area. People living in the Mamluk desert have their
unique connections with the space and its residents. Over the years, I have seen kids
become wives and mothers and start their own families. Over the last 6 weeks, I visited
several families there, talking to them about their lives and spending time in their homes. I
share my experience with you through this photo story.
