Register via link in bio! The Contrapuntal is delighted to invite you to the opening of our latest project, EverydayNile: Water, Energy, and Food Justice Along and Beyond the Nile River. The exhibition presents photographic stories in those countries developed by photographers working with communities and researchers on issues ranging from water access and environmental change to food systems, livelihoods and the everyday realities of people living with the Nile. The evening will also feature a panel discussion between researchers, photographers and project partners, reflecting on the process of bringing scientific research and visual storytelling together. We will conclude with a reception offering a space for researchers, photographers, students, journalists and the audiences to meet, exchange ideas and continue the conversation. Funded through The Journalism Science Alliance, a joint partnership led by The European Journalism Centre and Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and implemented with IHE Delft Institute for Water Education this project brings together photographers, researchers and project partners from across three Nile Basin countries – Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt – to examine how environmental and social changes are experienced by communities living along the river. Date: Thursday 10 Sep 2026, 18:00 - 21:00 Location: Atrium, International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague Free entrance! poster design by @akash.sh.sh

In the Rweru Sector of Bugesera District in eastern Rwanda, Sharita Island was one of the country’s most forgotten and high-risk communities. Cut off from the mainland by water and circumstance, its residents lived without roads, healthcare facilities, schools, electricity, clean water, or sanitation infrastructure for generations. To access any essential service such as a market, a hospital, a secondary school, residents had to embark on an hour-long canoe journey across open water. But the dangers were not limited to poverty and isolation. The wetlands surrounding Sharita Island were home to hippopotamuses, and fatal encounters were not uncommon. Antoine Mukeshimana, 45, a farmer who was born and raised on the island, knows this reality all too well. While traversing a wetland to harvest papyrus for livestock feed, his boat accidentally struck a hippo. The animal hurled him into the water and attacked him with devastating force. With no road access or nearby health facilities, neighbors carried Antoine across flooded wetlands to reach care.Transferred to Kigali’s University Central Teaching Hospital, he underwent three months of critical treatment resulting in the amputation of his leg. Antoine’s ordeal is not an isolated incident. It is emblematic of the profound vulnerabilities faced by communities living in geographically isolated, infrastructure-poor environments across Rwanda and the wider region. Hippo attacks, flooding, and the absence of emergency response systems created conditions in which survival itself was a daily achievement. As of 2024, more than 70 percent of Sharita Island’s population has been successfully relocated to the model village, where residents now have access to clean water, electricity, healthcare services, schools, and markets, basic rights that were entirely out of reach just years prior. The relocation of Sharita Island’s residents has become a national reference point, inspiring continued government action to identify and address the needs of communities living in high-risk zones across Rwanda. Between the Lines — a storytelling format where the photo isn’t just posted but unfolded, offering brief context or small details that open the scene a little further. A place to share insight into a moment, a story, a place, a person — and everything held quietly inside the frame. // Let me know what you think 🤔☺️ // #betweenthelines #southsudan #storytelling #unmiss #yei Digital Postcards from Yei The images show UNMISS peacekeepers at the Yei Airstrip in South Sudan, a convoy of white armored vehicles positioned as they wait for a delegation’s arrival. While one Nepali peacekeeper takes a selfie from the armored vehicle, others nearby lift their phones to photograph the moment. These small gestures form digital postcards sent from a remote mission site, bridging the distance between deployment and home.
