How a Durag Pulled Me Into Everyday Black Matter-ing by Dr. Chaz Barracks.

A cousin’s boyfriend. A fresh line-up. Ocean waves. And the careful tying of a durag β€” an initiation into ritualized Black hair and care that marked the beginning of something much larger.

From that memory, Barracks builds a theory. The durag is not just maintenance. It’s style, signal, archive, and refusal. A material object that Black femmes and queers have long inhabited β€” not just inherited β€” stretching its meaning to carve out more livable ways of being.

Moving through Tyler Mitchell, Symone’s iconic Drag Race runway, and the quiet femininity of mothers and aunties, Barracks traces what he calls β€œeveryday Black matter”, the ordinary textures of Black life that narratives of suffering or excellence consistently leave out.

To style yourself into being is its own kind of world-making

Big thanks to the Raynors for inviting me to play tunes at the Rent Party supporting @janeese4dc! I'm grateful for how rooted I felt in community and family. We got to hear Janeese's story and witness history in the making right in my best friend's living room.

Rent parties have always reflected our collective power - using the home as a space to gather, organize, and imagine a world that includes making dreams possible for everyone. Wishing Janeese the best as she takes on the DC establishment and fights for working families.

You can hear part of the set on my SoundCloud. And if you're in DC, use the tunes I curated as your walk-to-the-polls soundtrack. Put the people first and make your voice heard on Tuesday, June 16. taken in Washington D. C. by @everydayblackmatter

Selections from Chaz Barracks’s 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺π˜₯𝘒𝘺 π˜‰π˜π˜’π˜€π˜¬ π˜”π˜’π˜΅π˜΅π˜¦π˜³ syllabus β€” texts, film, sound, and additional sources that inspired and complement the film (link in story).

β€œFor me, both this film and the Black Matter podcast bring up questions of influenceβ€”specifically reflecting about what and who influences our media consumption and how we, Black folks, Black/queer folks often feel that our lives are [mis/under]represented or repressed by the things we watch that are [supposed to be] about us. Instead of expecting the media and other dominating institutions to see me and the humanity of those I am most nourished by in my everyday life, I believe that some of us have to make the media we want to see, and call our friends and chosen family members to participate in the show of it all. The 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺π˜₯𝘒𝘺 π˜‰π˜π˜’π˜€π˜¬ π˜”π˜’π˜΅π˜΅π˜¦π˜³ film is precisely this: it’s a glimpse of what is possible through a type of futuristic collaboration where everyone involved is invested in a blurring of the lines that often divide us or place us in boxes or containers that dictate who belongs and who does not.” @everydayblackmatter
