✍🏻✂️🪢 We designed the graphics and wall-mounted tools that invited visitors to contribute. ICA’s installation team painted the graphics in the exhibition palette and applied the titles and text in adhesive vinyl. Clipboards, a paper roll, neon masking tape, markers, colored pencils, scissors, and letter-size paper gave people ways to leave drawings, questions, and opinions during workshops.

The curtains changed the atmosphere around those walls. They could darken the gallery for a projection, a drag show, or to create a more intimate space for individual reflection and collective discussion. The same graphics took on a different role as the room and its activities changed.

La misma gráfica adquiría otro papel cada vez que cambiaban el espacio y sus actividades.

One of the things we absolutely love most about our little family business’s journey and growth over the 10 some years we’ve been at it, is the support of our beautiful friends that have shown up to see us in the various stages of the journey 🥰🥰🥰

How a Durag Pulled Me Into Everyday Black Matter-ing by Dr. Chaz Barracks.

A cousin’s boyfriend. A fresh line-up. Ocean waves. And the careful tying of a durag — an initiation into ritualized Black hair and care that marked the beginning of something much larger.

From that memory, Barracks builds a theory. The durag is not just maintenance. It’s style, signal, archive, and refusal. A material object that Black femmes and queers have long inhabited — not just inherited — stretching its meaning to carve out more livable ways of being.

Moving through Tyler Mitchell, Symone’s iconic Drag Race runway, and the quiet femininity of mothers and aunties, Barracks traces what he calls “everyday Black matter”, the ordinary textures of Black life that narratives of suffering or excellence consistently leave out.

To style yourself into being is its own kind of world-making

✨Artist Spotlight: Chaz A. Barracks, PhD✨

Chaz A. Barracks, PhD (he/they) Chaz A. Barracks, PhD (he/they) is a mixed-media scholar, filmmaker, podcast host, and educator exploring Black popular culture, Black feminist theory, and Black joy through oral history and critical media practice. Their work examines Black everyday life, queer aesthetics, and material/digital culture — from durags to digital commons — centering Black feminist/femme practices of care, pleasure, and worldmaking performance.

Known for his powerful 2020 film Everyday Black Matter, Chaz teaches and creates at the intersections of experimental media, Black popular culture, and joy and pleasure studies. His current writing project dives into the politics of deviance in everyday Black life. At Potluck, he explores “durag matter” — merging oral history, material design, and exhibition to create knowledge from everyday Black life (aka Black matter).

Catch Dr. Chaz at The Potluck on Saturday, May 23 for an interactive “durag matter” screen printing/storytelling oral history session. Bring your Durag and join in on the fun!
