Would you tow your van through this?!

Did anyone actually keep count of how many water crossings are on the Gibb? We stopped after about 20. Between the endless corrugations, red dust, and deep crossings, this track isn’t just tough on us, it’s tough on the car and van too.

Regular checks are a must out here:
🔧 Tighten bolts & check suspension.
💡 Keep an eye on wiring and lights.
🛞 Inspect tyres after every long stretch.
🚰 Watch for water getting into seals.

Hot tip: we keep a thermal heat gun on hand to quickly check brakes, bearings/axles, and shock absorbers. Here’s what to look out for:

Brakes - after driving, all brake drums/discs should be a similar temperature side to side. If one is much hotter, it could mean that brake is dragging or sticking.

Wheel Bearings / Axles - A healthy bearing will usually sit around the ambient + 20–40°C (so on a 25°C day, expect ~45–65°C). If one hub is significantly hotter than the others, it’s a warning sign the bearing may be failing or too tight.

Shock Absorbers - Shocks will warm up on corrugations. That’s normal. What you’re looking for is consistency, if one shock is much hotter than the rest, it may be overworking (or the others aren’t working at all).

Quick Rule of Thumb - Consistency is key → all four wheels/brakes/bearings should be in the same ballpark. Anything that feels “out of line” = investigate. If it’s too hot to touch with your hand, that’s already a sign something’s wrong.

Nothing opens your eyes more to just how much negativity there is in the world than buying a caravan and travelling full-time.

Whether it’s the neighbours in the caravan park, Ken and Karen on social media, or the self-appointed experts who seem to come out of the woodwork to tell you you’re doing it wrong, why would you do that, you should be doing this, or car choice, Van choice, how could you get bogged or whatever else they’ve decided you should have already been an expert at.

It’s exhausting.

We’re always happy to listen to advice, take on board different opinions and learn from others. But at the end of the day, we’ll take what we feel is right for our family and leave the rest behind.

What’s harder to understand is how quickly some people jump straight to anger, judgement and negativity. Like somehow someone else enjoying life is a personal attack on theirs.

But…

For every negative person we’ve come across, we’ve met some absolutely amazing people on the road too.

The people who stop for a chat.
The ones who lend a hand.
The ones who share a campfire, a laugh, a story or a cold drink.
Even the ones from Companies and Brands we’ve worked with.
The ones who genuinely want to see other people enjoying the same lifestyle they love.

They’re the people who remind us why we do this.

Because at the end of the day, our kids are smiling, we’re happy, we’re seeing some incredible places and we’re making memories together.

And that’s what matters.

Life can be really hard for everyone and it’s not fair, especially now. There’s already enough going on without creating more drama, negativity and anger for the sake of it.

If you’re bored, go and fill your time with something positive.

Go camping.
Get some fresh air.
Watch the sunset.
Have a laugh.
Switch the phone off for a while.
Reconnect with the people around you and maybe even with yourself.

There’s a pretty incredible world out there and our slice, is top notch, if you take a minute to look for it.

It takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile… so being cranky must be exhausting. 😂

Choose the good stuff, it’s pretty awesome when you find it. 🤙🏼 by @everydazeasunday

Hat Head doesn’t have a lot going on… and that’s exactly what we like about it.

A quiet little coastal town with beautiful beaches and a really slow pace.

Nothing fancy, nowhere you need to be. Just an easy place to spend a few days with the kids and switch off a bit.

One of our favourite spots on the NSW coast. 🤎

Hat Head National Park 🌿

One of those walks you don’t forget. Stunning coastal tracks, unreal views and kangaroos along the way. 🦘🌿

A little piece of the NSW coast we’d happily revisit.

SAVE THIS ONE 📌 for your next visit to Hat Head!
